    Pay as you go mobile

    I have a contract with 3 and my phone has had to be sent back to Nokia for repair and will not be back for 7-10 days. I was wanting to maybe get a pay as you go phone to tide me over until then. Does anyone know, is it possible to use a 3 contract SIM card in a pay as you go phone? I've seen a Nokia at Argos for £19.99 with Virgin mobile...

    You should be able to use a 3 sim card in any UNLOCKED payg mobile. However, 3G features wont be available unless the phone is 3G enabled.

    so its urban myth that 3 sims dont work in anything other 3 handsets?

    I cant say this for 100% sure.

    I'm afraid edi is wrong on this one. The facts are;

    3 which is the network provider a bit like O2, only operates a 3G service, for simplicity think video calling mobile phones. 1G was analogue, 2G were the first digital phones and alot of todays phones are 2G (there is 2.5G but let's not complicate it).

    Now 3 haven't got complete national coverage, so when you are out of a 3G signal area, 3 have a back up agreement for roaming with Orange for which they have to pay Orange when you use it. This means when you are out of the 3 coverage area, 3 are making no money as they're having to pay Orange for use of their 2G network.

    Now, if you put a 3 sim in a non 3G phone, it will have to operate on 2G permanently, which means no revenue for the 3 network. They will send you a text asking you to stop using that phone ans if you continue they will cut you off.

    How do they know you're using a different phone, well first off phones have a code number but more importantly, when you are in the 3 network area, the sim cannot switch to 3G because you are using a 2G phone - that is the give away.

    So in summary, there is no technical reason a 3 sim can't work in another phone, it is purely a financial reason.

    Forgive me for being dense, but am I to assume that a mobile I buy from Argos will no be unlocked and will need unlocking in some way?

    This is different subject, but the majority of phones you buy from Argos will be netowrk locked and as someone who sells phones and unlocks them I am speaking from experience.

    You have two choices, buy a phone on your network of choice or pay about £10 to have it unlocked.

    Most phones sold are network locked, O2 contract phones and CPW phones have the highest chance of being unlocked.

    Edit;

    Just noticed your are the OP, not only will you need an unlocked phone, it will have to be a 3G phone as well.

    you will need to buy a phone that comes with a 3 simcard. thats the only way your 3 sim will work.

    I'm afraid this is also incorrect. Any 3G phone that is unlocked will work with a 3 sim. For instance I have a K800i which is an O2 contract phone which came unlocked, I have a PAYG 3 sim and it functions fine in my K800i. This is because it is a 3G phone.

    Phones supplied by 3 are no different to any other network, but they are all 3G phones.

    Yep, there is the ubiquitous C975 Motorola and the ZTE F866 (Chinese) both heavily sold by the 3 network until recently for very cheap money. Now in abundance on ebay for next to nothing. If you want to use your own sim, avoid the ZTE as they usually have the sim glued in from new.

    Current ebay listings links, someone has a C975 for sale in the selling forum, I also have a new C975 which I have unlocked for use on all networks - £20 + postage.
