Hey all,

I have some decorating that needs doing that i cant do myself, am thinking of getting a 'handy man' in but am clueless to how much would be reasonable to pay, so if i list some jobs could you nice people give me an idea - i'll buy materials and will throw in tea and toast lol

painting hallway, average size but high ceiling at the top and laying stair carpet
laying front room carpet 15ft x 15ft
tiling kitchen, around 80 plain white tiles, laying floor tiles in kitchen and bathroom, very small area in both.

thats it, the rest of the painting ect i can do myself, so what is a fair price for these jobs for both parties?

please no suggestions that i do them myself as these are the ones i dont want to do lol, i tried laying the bathroom floor and made a mess of it so had to buy new tiles, dont want to risk it again and especially not with carpet

thank you

yeah thats a worry too, but there are just some things i cant do :-( and with all their best intentions im fed up with people offering to do jobs but them not getting around to it, or doing half a job, least if i pay, it will get done, hopefully :?

It depends where you live. Even basic (relatively unskilled) handymen around London probably look for £150/200 a day. Whereas in traditionally cheaper areas (e.g Norfolk, Lincolnshire) I would think you would get someone for less than half that. There is also the substantial Eastern European influx who are rumoured to work for £40 a day or less.

So, estimate how long it would take to do the job, then add on say 25% (because jobs always take longer than you expect), multiply by what you think is the local going rate and you'll have a fair estimate.

Family friend does £100 per day cash in hand, and you should always offer cash in hand just to be nice  As long as they aren't on benefits it's all good.

LOL.. if you were paying for DIY you would be paying yourself..

But really i would recommend speaking to some friends, see if they know anyone, people will prob be happy for any extra money at the moment. Pay what you are happy to pay and they are happy to accept :P

painting hallway, average size but high ceiling at the top couple of hours

and laying stair carpet
laying front room carpet 15ft x 15ft another 2 hours

tiling kitchen, around 80 plain white tiles, laying floor tiles in kitchen and bathroom, very small area in both. 1/2 a day

this is what i could do it in. You could get all those jobs done in a days work.

You could do that in a day?
Painting the hallway with 2 to 3 coats including drying between coats is probably 3 hours not including setting up and cleaning etc.

Slight underestimate I think

painting i would charge £50
Carpet another £50
and if i could do decent tiling it'll be another £80 for the tiling and flooring

I would love to see your work.

So in 2 hours:

Washing the walls with sugar soap
Allow to dry
Cut in first coat
Roller 1st coat
Allow to dry
cut in 2nd coat
Roller 2nd coat
Allow to dry
Go over any patches with a brush/roller

Edit: I see you're suspended. :-(
