    Paypal and proof of postage.

I have someone coming to look at a caravan, but they only have a credit card, and want to pay via paypal, before collecting. How can i do this properly so that they can't do a chargeback? Would a receipt of purchase be good enough?

I can do paypal gift though, right? That should give them no rights.

No, tell them cash only, and nothing else. Or else this could lead to you losing alot of money

dont do it made UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

If need be they can surely withdraw cash on their cc.

Even if it means losing out on the sale, the RISK you run otherwise is LOSE the trailer AND your CASH

why would they do a chargeback? U mean just in case they do so fraudulently?

I looked into this, as someone wanted to do something similar with one of my Ebay items, but basically you cannot stop chargeback through paypal, if they tell their credit card company they didn't authorise payment the card company can take it back. Paypal just recommend keeping all postage records and emails from buyer, and putting in a claim if it happens.

I decided not to let my potential buyer have the item as it was £300 I didnt want to lose, and the doubt was put in my mind over the fact they wouldn't pay cash on collection.

Not if they claim they didnt make the transaction. DO NOT DO IT!!!!!

If you do do the receipt remember to write on it sold as seen both of you sign and print and put a cross through any blank space left on page also do it in a duplicate book or receipt book with carbon copy so you both have the same receipt cant be changed then

The credit card probably would though.

i personally would only do cash on collection, but its entirely up to you if you wanna take the risk, and its a massive risk to take

Yes it would be the credit card that claim it back, paypal would not refund unless given a valid reason.

But if someone uses a stolen credit card to pay you, the credit card company will claim it back.

Thanks for all your advice, I will insist on cash. If they want the caravan enough, they will be able to get it.

I hadn't thought about being able to chargeback via the credit card company

A bit confused - what do you want proof of postage of?

A paypal dispute requires proof of postage for the seller to win. A collection wouldn't have any proof of postage.

All irrelevant now anyway. Cash or nothing, i'm not taking the risk, i'll just have to find another buyer if they can't pay

Good idea but still use a receipt with Sold As Seen wrote on it

Wouldn't a caravan come under the Motors section and therefore the usual rules about proof of delivery don't apply ?

That aside, the risks of a chargeback are too great.

in the past i purchased a car via ebay using paypal (credit card) the seller then posted me via special del the log book so he had "proof of delivery"

The same Paypal rules don't apply for cars,so there was no need for him to do that:thumbsup:

Would a BACS payment to your' current account be a secure method of payment for a large sum of money?

Or can these be reversed too?

just be careful you dont end up with dodgy cash too

Yes your right, and he would have no proof in the event of a chargeback … Yes your right, and he would have no proof in the event of a chargeback so too bigger risk

A signed photocopy of the buyers driving licence for the credit card company, in case of a chargeback. They can't deny the transaction then

But anyway, as agreed, cash only.

Paypal and their laziness is the issue here. It would be a case of taking the buyer to court, more often than not. Gotta love em lol.

I suppose the biggest stumbling block is paypals (in)famous claim of keeping your financial details private. In this case you couldn't dispute the chargeback directly as you wouldn't know the card companies details. I sold our red escort on ebay a while back (outside transaction obviously, screw ebay and their fees lol) and the buyer asked if they could use PP, we said no and they turned up with the cash next day. An honest buyer who really wants the item will accept that you don't want payment via PP.

And of course, motor cat listings are exempt from having to accept PP in the first place

Anyone know whether BACS would be the best method of selling expensive items on eBay then?

    Spot on there:thumbsup:

Now go find me an 02 reg van in kent for about £500 with full MOT. Not bothered about tax. Oh and I want it to go as well, no crashed up/blown up engined/knackered clutch/spares or repairs carp
