    paypal... confused!

Can anyone help? I'm not good with PayPal and the help on paypal online isn't...

I sold a tablet on Facebook marketplace. the buyer sent money and I see it in my account. it's status is "money received"

there's nothing on the payment to suggest what it's for or who to send it to. I have the buyers address via pm but in the past the payment always came with these details.

would I be covered as a seller assuming recorded mail etc? does it look dodgy or am I being overly concerned?

I dont think a buyer has any protection when using paypal thru any facebook sites. I may be wrong....

The buyer sends money to your PayPal account and you get an email to say they have paid. On your ebay account page the item is marked as paid. You need to dispatch the item you have sold. PayPal don't release the money until the transaction has been completed is my understanding.

Opps sorry. I see you sold on Facebook. Same thing though. You get email to say they paid. Should show in your account within 48 hours

if u have low feedback it can take 30 days for the money to come off hold or the seller leave positive feedback. on facebook if they sent it via pay friends and family where it's free then there will be no buyer protection.

doesn't help now, but in future just be paid by Bank Transfer

Did he pay you for good or as a gift?

If it's a gift then there is no protection.

Your insurance for delivery and breakages is recorded delivery up to the value of the item.

this probably sounds stupid. how do I know if it was a gift?

the money says it's there but worried as I heard people can just reverse a pp gift?

    incorrect.

buyer can still claim 'unauthorised usage of account' and the payment can be reversed.

Maybe crossed wires. The point I was trying to make is that if the buyer just sends £50 as a gift there is no reference to what he has bought and the seller wouldn't receive an address. (at least that's the way it used to work).

If it's goods then the seller would create an invoice detailing what the goods are. After the invoice is sent the buyer pays it and this would require an address for delivery.

But yes if the buyer doesn't like what he receives he could claim his account was hacked.

it has been sent to you as a gift, you would have not been charged any fees and won't see any address etc. as it's meant to be a gift so no need for any details. the buyer could possibly tell PayPal they didn't authorise it but it's rare however they don't have any protection. even though there's no need to post it signed for I would still do it and take a photo of the parcel with buyers address. you don't add anything else to paypal even if the buyer tells them the payment wasn't authorised as you will get suspended for misuse of "gift" payments. I use gumtree, shpock and rarely FB but won't post anything using PayPal unless it's via eBay. I even reluctantly use bank transfer preferring a face to face cash on pick up. I am at present having three buyers trying to fleece me out of £160 on gumtree little do they realise I know they are working together trying to get me to accept either a credit card or PayPal on pick up, even pushing me to accept PayPal before they have even seen it so next time try use cash or BT and that as a last resort

Sounds like the payment was sent as a gift and you're not covered.

Maybe genuine but I wouldn't risk it.
