Paypal payment pending...not sure I trust the buyer!

Found 4th Jan 2010
Ok so I listed an item on ebay today, fixed price with best offer. I didn't expect it to sell at the fixed price as there are a couple on there a bit cheaper, but it has.

I knew that my payment would be held as I only have a feedback score of 7 but the person who's bought it only has 3 feedback and hasn't bought anything since April. I can't see what they bought but the people that they have bought from only sell stuff that cost a couple of quid.

I just have a bad feeling about the transaction. Why would someone 'buy it now' from someone with low feedback when they could buy one cheaper from another seller with more feedback? They didn't even make an offer or anything.

So if I post the item, they could either not leave feedback or they could file some kind of dispute & they'd get their money back.

I remember why I don't bother with ebay now!

If the item you sold is highish value why not just add recorded delivery when you post it. Only costs about 72p extra pence and they have to sign on arrival so myou have proof.

Just make sure you don't post until the payment is completed, they might be thinking you've assumed because it says pending that it will come, but then not pay, so make sure the payment status on the paypal website says completed, even if you get an email, check the actual paypal site!

Send it insured signed for
I don't sell on e-bay - but I do buy

some people just don't look around on there - I've seen plenty of people bidding on items that elsewhere have had lower Buy it now prices - can't see why you are so suspicious (maybe I see good in everyone)
no offence

+1

would it not be possible to contact the buyer and explain that you can't risk sending it to someone with little feedback until payment has been cleared, and that they need to leave feedback in advance so paypal will release the funds? (i heard it works like that??)
or else if they are not willing to do that then cancel the sale.

The buyer has sent the money, it's Paypal that are holding it. This is what it says on the transaction page:

The money from the payment you received is being held temporarily for up to 21 days. During this time the money will show as pending and you won't be able to access it.

Your funds will be released after 21 days, providing your buyer hasn't reported any problems. We may be able to release the money sooner if we can confirm that the item was delivered or, if this is an eBay item, your buyer leaves you positive feedback.

The item was sold for £45 so I was going to send it recorded but if the buyer claims that the item is not as described or something like that, I'm assuming Paypal would just refund them?

Under the 21 day hold you should post immediately as it's paypal holding … Under the 21 day hold you should post immediately as it's paypal holding the money in the eys of paypal the customer has paid, it's BECAUSE YOU have low fb it's been held. If you had higher fb, your payment would have gone straight in and shown as completed. One thing to remember with paypal though, is paypal saying cleared, and you have or they have your funds means jack, the payment source can still bounce upto a week or so later resulting in reversal, this you do have to weigh up the odds of happening as seller protection won't cover you, trust your instinct. That goes for all payment methods via payapl including gift, so equally applies for trading here.

I thought seller protection covered you for things like that?

I think it does cover reversals now! Its just a massive faff if it does happen as they first take the money from you then ask for a load of proofs, including proof of delivery, then review it and give you the money.

All good advise....... but the "bounce" could be considerably further out. In fact, the banks have no set time limit on when they can reverse transfers for something that might be dodgy. So if the payment was made using fraudulent funds and undetected.... who knows how long it could go before you get the money clawed back. That said, I think Paypal protection where applicable now covers these problems(?)

Obviously this is an extreme example.... but nontheless its a reality that does and will continue to happen. Trust no one - especially when you have bad vibes!!!!!!)

I've sold quiite a few high value items on ebay, often to people with not much feedback, and its not bit me in the backside to date as long as you play things buy the book.
ALWAYS send recorded delivery and keep a note of the tracking number and keep the original receipt showing where the item is going.
As long as you do that, you're cushty.

Oh and one other thing to note:
if money's on hold by paypal, you'll get it 21 days later if the buyer hasn't left feedback.
Obviously tis better to try and get the buyer to do so first but just something to bare in mind to stop you worrying.

Fleabay's rubbish - sell on here, it's free and (usually!) much nicer people!! :-D

Thanks for all your advice. I'm going to post it via recorded delivery and keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully I'll be covered by Paypal's seller protection.

One last question, if the item gets lost or damaged in the post do Royal Mail actually refund you in stamps? :?
