    PC Help

    Hello

Im trying to connect my pc to the internet. Currently i use the laptop and connect via the router. But ive not used my pc in years and was thinking about connect that to the internet too.

Ive tried using an ethernet cable from the pc to the router and althought it says internet connected it wont acutally connect on to a website and still seems as if its trying to use the old internet setting that were on the PC. Ive tried to create a new connection but it still wont connect to the internet. Was considering buying a wireless usb thingy but will this work?

    Any help would be appreicated

the usb wireless would work and be a lot easier

when you say old settings i assume you mean it was previously attached to a usb modem
go into control panel/add remove programs and uninstall all the old usb software, reboot and try again
also if not used in a while it may be busy downloading windows updates so leave it connected via ethernet for a couple of hours to let it finish

in internet settings, you need to set it to never dial a connection.

Also check your tcp/ip settings to make sure they're set to dynamic

    how do you know that?

if it doesnt work via cable then just putting a usb dongle in doesnt really help things

Home Premium, the usb dongle I had wasnt compatable with 64 bit Windows(the earlier model and later one of the same did though for some reason I think due to chipset) also my PCI freeview card didnt work either in 64 bit, after hours of searching I only found an analogue driver.

No it isn't usb has to install drivers the first time you plug something … No it isn't usb has to install drivers the first time you plug something in, windows might have them but it still has to do it, ethernet is always on and you just plug it in.

as with most usb wireless dongles you instal the drivers then it tells you when to put in the dongle, but of course if you cant get it to work then maybe you should get a competent person to do it for you

download the ultimate version i think it has a better driver database.

wireless will be slower. and is more complicated. it might srot the problem if it is a tcp/ip settings issue because it would create a new set of rules for the new network. but cabled connection is much simpler and won't randomly fail. it's almost certainly that you have your tcp/ip setting set to a static IP address.

right click on your network connection, choose status, then properties, then select 'Internet protocol (TCP/IP) click properties and make sure both settins are on "obtain automatically". if that doesn't fix your probelm (you might have to restart both your pc and router after that) then let me know, and i'll have a think what else it might be. but don't go buying extra hardware.

Also just to rule it out does the network cable say 'patch' or it or 'crossover' because what you want is a patch lead but almost certainly you have the right lead.

You could also try turning off the firewall temporarily.

you are really giving out some useless advice

yeah, right - just download ultimate lol

if the ops router doesnt work via cable, a usb dongle would not help matters one iota! :whistling:
