is it overheating?

open it up and check all fans can move freely

sounds like thermal paste, had this problem when I built my pc, the paste wasnt enough and it kept powering down.

Either that or the fans loose

Thanks gaming_guy but I don't think its overheating as it won't actually turn on in the first place...

At a guess I would say your CPU fan has stopped working and the PC is shutting down to stop overheating.

Could be the same with your GFX card.

Did you look to see if the fan was working or not ?

Ok just checked and the cpu fan works but not graphics fan what should I do?!

You can clean and lubricate the barrings to see if you can get it going for the time being but you will have to buy a replacement fan in the long run.

Ok I pulled it out plugged it back in and the fans working but still cuts out....

take the gfx card out and use onboard gfx to at least determine it is the gfx card at fault. do you get any BIOS beeps on startup before it turns off?

power supply

The PC i'm typing on now had the same problem.

It turned out the fan in the power supply was screwed and the PC was cutting out after about 10sec. I went to my local computer shop and bought a replacement power supply. Their pretty easy (and cheap) to replace as long as you keep track of what plugged in where.

^Exactly.

If it was the CPU then it would simply restart itself. The power supply is your problem here, either it's wattage is not enough to supply your computer or it's duff.

Just a quickie, have you checked that the power button is not sticking?

Like csiman says, do you get any post beeps on startup?

Do you see anything on the screen when it is booting?

What rating is the PSU & what gfx card?

If the mobo has onboard gfx card, Boot up and if you can enter the BIOS before it powers off, select to boot from onboard gfx, save the settings and power down.
Give it a couple mins.
Now remove the gfx card and plug into the onboard vga, bootup and...
If it stays on, then it's a faulty gfx card.
If it doesn't, then you may have a problem with the processor, memory seating or a mobo fault. (hopefully not).
