    dead motherboard

Yer I share this thought as well.

    However,

Take out the ram, the processor, and all cards and drives. Then put the processor and ram back in, boot it up, see if its working. Then reconnect all the other bits. Could be a build up of static on the ram. I have seen it before.

What about the good old ATX reset? - Unplug the power, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then reconnect and turn on.

There's an led on the motherboard that comes on when you plug the power in. If it doesn't come on the motherboard is dead.

Yes, even if you don't fit a new MB you could take the hard drive out and put it in an enclosure (if needs be) and transfer the data to another pc / laptop.

depends on HDD sizes and what you want to transfer

you could fit it as a slave drive inside your own pc, I would buy an enclosure off ebay (about £5 with lead) for the drive and use the USB on any pc to transfer.

would do the job? also is it a case of just pluging in the hard drive via usb lead etc

After replacing the motherboard I would just try booting with the drive still inside. If the old and new chipsets are the same it should be fine. Worth a try anyway.

just checked that user and am not sure what onei should be looking for as they dont seem to inc usb lead

They all include leads as far as I can see, do you have the model number of the drive?

I am assuming it is a 3.5 IDE but without knowing for sure i don't want to say which enclosure you should get.
