    pc problem

i have 2 internal hard drives. one used for operating sys and the other used for storing files.

so one of the drives is seldomly used .

is there a device where i can switch off the hdd without taking off the cables and flick the switch back on whenever i want to store the files.

not interested in external enclosure like usb- prefer the hdd to be internally

Why would you want to switch it off?

If you did so, you would have to reboot your PC every time you wanted to use the Hard Drive, as the PC needs to 'see' it at start-up (unless you get a USB one, which you said you don't want).

I can't think of any benefit to be gained by what you're proposing:?

i am just concerned that the other drive will be consuming power even though i wont be using it.

my last hdd died as a result of a power surge, so thought surely there be a device where i can physically switch off the drive at the front of the pc

nope, not what i know of

I think you can get removable internal hard drives. This may solve it as you can take it out when your not using it?

EDIT: While your there Iom is it worth getting a surge protector for a PC.

For what they cost/save, I'd say yes.

good point any cheapies to be had

Hard drives last longer if they are left on an use minimal power when not in use. If its just used occasionally i.e. less then 10% of the time the computer is on, it can be made into an external drive or you can have a caddy system where drives are slotted in.

I'd just leave it in there tbh.

power management in windows can be set to turn off the drive after a specified time....will send it into a standby mode
