Hello

Firstly you need to be clear that you are not confusing Memory and Hard Drive size.
I've had a look at the spec of the machine and it says 512mb of Memory and 40 GB Hard Drive Size. So if you are saying 1.82GB is used and only 1.67GB remains then that means the hard drive is only 3.49GB in size. Are you sure this is correct as I have never seen a hard drive so small.

If it is running low on memory (it has 512mb of memory) then that means something is hogging all the memory, this shouldn't happen on a machine with just the operating system on it.

You need to make sure you aren't confusing MEMORY with HARD DRIVE space.

Comes with a 14 day warranty RTB

Tell him you've received it and aren't impressed because instead of having a 40gb hard-drive it looks to have a 4gb hard drive!

XP takes up a fair chunk of space too, not sure how much but wouldn't be suprised if it took up as much as said.

My first computer had a 2gb hard drive

Original Poster

it says local disk total size 3.50GB

OK two things here

Firstly how did you pay - PayPal?

seconds if the first PC is Ok and the second is not then I would guess that the seller has wiped the hard disk on both mahines as these are refurbs - ( I would guess ex corporate pcs) and he has forgotten to re-install windows on one pc. The 1.82 GB that you are seeing is mre than likely the recovery partion.

Does the working PC run generic windoes or does it have Dell branding i.e. desktop background. If it does then you could probably run a system restore yourself. Or get someone to do it for you.

I would email the seller and politely point pout that it looks like he had forgotten to re-instal windows on one PC, you may need to take a photo of the post screen to show him the drive propeties.

If the worst comes to the worst file a cliam with paypal if that is how you paid.

Let us know - folk here will help you

How much do you know about computers?

Is the back of the PC sealed with any kind of warranty sticker?

EliTom

his rtb warranty states i have to pay to return it too but im not too clued on and thats why i wanted to ask you lovely ppl,so the local disk should be saying 40gb and its only 3.50gb?

they did come with a restore disk i havent tried it as yet as i dont know whats best to do,i paid with paypal

OK how much do you know about computers.

Can you open the back up and check the hard drive physically?

If you can check the capacity of the hard drive or at least the make/model of the hard drive.

If we can establish that it has a 40GB hard drive then my first presumptions is probably correct.

i wouldnt have a clue how to elitom ;o( im so teed off the kids so wanted their internet room sorted out and now this, dont know anyone nearby that could help me either

Just to be clear, I assume the faulty pc does not boot into windows?

In 'My Computer' Windows will only tell you the size of a Drive PARTITION that has been formatted & allocated a drive letter.

To see the Actual size of a Drive Goto :

START, CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, DISK MANAGEMENT

This will tell you if it really has a 40Gb drive installed and part of the drive is just unformatted & partitioned.

It it still says 4Gb and NOT 40Gb then i'd query this with the seller.

It could be a genuine mistake and he's forgotten to replace the drive in his haste to build it as i use old drives too for testing before installing the proper one.

Original Poster

yes it does,it boots up fine loads up windows then the warnings start popping up about disk space being low

beneath that it says disk 0 basic 37.25GB online 3.50GB ntfs and 33.74GB unallocated

hope that means something!

Yep looks like the seller has installed windows on the recovery partition and not reallocated the rest of teh drive first.

You will need to FDisk the drive and re-install windows or use something like partion magic to recover the rest of the drive.

If you do not know someone who can do this for you then email the seller and see wht he offers. It does appear to be a mistake on his part.

as I say email the seller and see what he can offer - it does look like it is his mistake.

It would be a relatively easy fix for anyone with moderate computer knowledge. Why not ask friends or work mates or look in the local paper for a computer repairer then get the seller to pay, as it would probably be cheaper than shipping the pc back and forth.

let us know how you get on with the seller

Doesn't XP have a built-in disk partition tool like Vista?
If Yes, you can use that, its a simple operation
Just right-click the unallocated space and select "Make New Volume", follow the popping instructions

If not you can use one of the ]freeware listed here to fix the disk partition, although these softwares are more complicated

Hopefully someone here could talk you through this.

I would but I do not do that kind of this often enough to know the steps without running through it on my pc and I am at work with a business locked pC right now.

it would save me money i guess if it could be sorted without sending it back, have pulled the sellers details and he doesnt answer the phone which is a mobile either

SInce you havent install anything on your PC, I guess you can also manage the partition using the Win XP installation CD
The detailed steps are here: support.microsoft.com/kb/…348..
Chose the "Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)" options. This will erase the current partition and integrate the 40GB HDD

I know it takes some of ur time and involves risk, but it may save you the money

if i run the restore disk that came with the tower do you think it wil sort the problem out?

If you feel brave or you can find someone with moderate pc knowledge check out these two pages

support.microsoft.com/kb/…67/

support.microsoft.com/kb/…00/

after all he has sent you the recovery disks so you just need to get the hard disk formatted and set as Primary partition using the whole capacity of the disk - so you can then use the recovery disks

why not try it - just stick it in and follow the instructions :w00t:

If that does not work and the pc boots strainght into windows let us know as you may have to change a setting in the bios to get it to boot from cd.

You may have to re authenticate windows with microsoft but that is not difficult - just a free phone call

Well, NOT automatically ....
You have to do a clean install of XP.
The crucial step is here:
There will be a screen that SHOWS your current HDD partition (3.50GB of C: and the 36.50GB unallocated space).

It will then ASK what to do with them, presenting you these options:
• Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)
• Format the partition by using the FAT file system (Quick)
• Format the partition by using the NTFS file system
• Format the partition by using the FAT file system
• Leave the current file system intact (no changes)

DONT choose the last option (I would recommend option 1 or 3)

I would ask for a partial refund...he's caused you a lot of stress. I've got a few 350Gb hard drives installed on my computer before SP2 you had to partition them like the seller has done to your drive, but never needed on a 40Gb hard drive. It's not the easiest thing to go out of his way to partition it like that, XP Setup is quite clear on partitioning drives when you do it.

I wouldn't bother with any of the support pages and just reinstall windows yourself, make sure you've got the WinXP serial number as you might need it....making sure they came with a genuine copy of XP right?

yes yes ... do this too... consider it as fee for your labour

OK two things to note

yes you maybe able to recover the rest of the drive but it would be a new partition and would be seen as a new drive i.e. D:/ or E:/ whatever the cd drive is not - if you see what I mean.

So your windows will still be on C:/ at 3.xx gig and your d:/ will be 30+ gig

the problem is you cannot then change the drive letters.

Best to re-install windows

You need to change a setting in te bios but I need to check how to do that on a Dell and also my mates going to buy me a bacon buttie now so I will be back later if no one else has sorted you in the meantime

Original Poster

ok i aint going anywhere lol thanks evr so enjoy ya buttie

Hi. if it doesnt do anything when you insert the disc in and restart your pc then you need to go into the BIOS and set the computer to boot from cd first.
one thing you will need to do first before re-installing windows is to delete the partitions that are currently on the hard drive now and create a new single partition, otherwise you will still be installing windows back onto the 3.5gb partition (back to square one).
unfortunately for a newbie its not one of the easiest things to do as it is easy to get lost.
another thing you will need to consider is that once you have got windows installed you will also need to make sure all the necessary drivers for hardware are installed.

Have you got the other PC set up right on the internet yet? Is it in the same room?
If you wish i am prepared to meet you on MSN and talk you through the whole process step-by-step at a prearraged time on the working PC. is this any good to you? i am used to assisting over MSN with friends when they have problems with their PC's.

I think its F2 to enter setup on a Dell....you want to find a page that allows you to boot from the CD drive or you can press F12 which brings up a boot menu.
