OK I've been pulling my hair out! Ordered a Vostro Desktop from Dell for my sister, with Win 7 preinstalled. My sister does not like Win 7, and would like XP back.

I put the XP disc in, waited for setup to start, XP drivers started to load..but then when it said 'Starting Windows' (In the blue setup screen with the captions at the bottom), I get an error similar to BSOD, telling me my computer has been turned off to prevent damage.

Anyways surely I'm not the only one with this problem...

I am always so envious of the posters on here that are amazing when it comes to technical stuff like this. I just dont have a clue !!!!

Hope u get it sorted - in fact am sure u will once the experts come along:thumbsup:

The simplest solution is to tell her how good 7 is and that she will get used to it! I had a lot of problems trying to re-load XP on one of my machines not to long ago. I had a similar problem in that the blue screen of death kept appearing! Eventually I put Ubuntu on it. Not really much help I know. Good Luck!!!!

have you tried 3 pin reset?

Sounds like one of the drivers on the new Dell may not be compatible with XP. Have a look at the Dell web site and make sure what you have bought is compatible with XP. This is a good start to see if we can find out what's wrong.

xmal

Try going into the BIOS and change the setting for the drive from AHCI to ATA and then try reinstalling

This can happen sometimes with Dell pc's, that should fix it

try and reset the bios to default settings then try the xp disc. I don't understand why u sis doesn't like win7 as its easier to use an faster with better geatures

3 pin reset?

Last thing, could you not backup the drivers, just format the drive and start a fresh install

3 pin reset?

unplug it and then plug it back in again.:whistling:

Whats the point on having a new computer and running an eight year old OS on it? Stick to Win 7, to use XP on it is madness....

i agree, i just upgraded from xp to windows 7, its much faster and better

darn tootin

nowt wrong with Win7 at all.
maybe takes a few goes to get used to it if you're a beginner but i shifted from xp to Win7 within 24hrs of playing with it.
still have my XP partition but I never boot into it anymore.

plus they probably dont make XP drivers for the majority of the hardware on the machines now.

doubt its a driver issue if no external drivers have been installed,
possibly (as suggested) a bios issue with config of the sata controller but normally this presents itself as a failure to detect the disk rather than a fatal error
maybe something in the way the file system is organised by win7, try booting to a command prompt off the xp cd, then remove the partition and recreate it on install after reboot.

Did your format the drive before you began installing XP?

Have you tried booting into safe mode and updating the drivers for your hardware?

There are lot of companies that have not produced drivers for Win 7 yet.:whistling:

DONT GO BACK TO XP.

A computer needs DRIVERS. These are small software programs that help the components in your computer to work (sound, graphics, etc etc).

For a new computer there probably wont be drivers for XP.

As others have said, going back to XP is a stupid idea.

If she really does not like Windows 7 then try to make it "look" like XP by changing the interface a bit (or let her get used to Windows 7)

OK point taken. In any case, would you guys be able to recommend a good XP theme so my sister can start using her desktop (no she has not even touched it!). The one i've found is: ]http//sa…235

Maybe theres others available?

Thanks again,

Zak.

Which Vostro is it? When running through startup, does it get past the stage 'Press F6 to load additional drivers'? What XP CD exactly are you using?
