PC Techy Help Needed - my laptop keeps crashing

Please could someone suggest how to give me pc some tlc to make it better?

EVERY time I use the internet it crashes at some point. I can't find a repeat pattern of why it does it, sometimes it's when I first try to connect to the internet, other times it's whilst i'm opening new windows. Sometimes I may only have 1 window open and try to open a 2nd when it crashes so it's not as if i've got loads open.

I've got rid of a load of excess documents to try and free up my memory, i've done a de-frag. But still no joy. I've got McAfee security. My laptop is a Inspriron 1300 from Dell.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks x

How long has it been doing this?

Thanks, i'll give it a go.

It's been happening for about a month now.

OK. I was going to suggest that you do a System Restore, but I don't know if the dates will go that far back. Might be worth a go to see.

Sorry for delay.

Click START then
Control Panel then
Performance and Maintenance
on the right you'll see System Restore
Choose a date (if possible over a month ago) and click OK.

Your computer will shutdown after a while, then restart.

Hopefully this works.

what exactly do you mean by crashing? Is the computer freeze/restart/shutdown etc? Or is it just the browser?

If it is only the browser (and i presume you can connect to the internet) its a browser software problem...

What browser are you using?

If you are using IE, try repair/ uninstal-reinstal it OR better still, install another browser (Firefox, K-meleon Safari, Opera etc)

If its a firefox and you have add-ons installed , most likely its an add ons conflicts. Get rid of all add ons and try reinstalling one by one to see which one causing problem

Thanks guys, but you are blinding me with science. You have to talk me through it s-l-o-w-l-y.

If you are using Vista then you'll need to find System Recovery Options

As you sound very new to computers, I would imagine you are using internet explorer to browse the internet (A BLUE 'e' icon).

dont use that as its rubbish so install firefox and use that instead:-

mozilla.com/en-US/

system restore is a possible solution. You can do that but a couple things I want to point out:

1. its a big sweepstake tool not specifically aimed at a particualr problem. It restore all system setting (registry, driver info etc) to an earlier point of time.

2. Because of point 1, If a problem is caused by a corrupt / missing file and this files are needed to be fresh loaded by the system, the problem will persist as happened to me once this week.

3. It also can change other system settings unintededly.

I would try this first:

- Install new another browser to see if it has the same problem. If it doesnt then the provblem is with the current browser

download Firefox here: mozilla-europe.org/en/…ox/

Opera here : opera.com/dow…ad/

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it.

I've tried the restore thingy 5 times now but the computer doesn't seem to want to accept it.

I shall try the other things and then have another go later as it's taking ages x

Where do you use the laptop, is it on a desk, carpet or a bag of dust? It could be related to a hardware issue (My pc crashed last night because my graphics card over heated because it was full of dust and wasn't able to cool it's self down) In other words your laptop could be shutting it's self down, or freezing to lower it's temp before it begins to say "I'm melting! Melting!". How old it the laptop?

It sits on my knee for hours so could be melting! It's 2 years old.

I'm loving the Firefox, just need to spend an age reading all about it so I'll have a clue of its many features x

Use a tray so there's space for it to breath.

Why anyone still uses internet explorer is a mystery to me :?
