pc located in norfolk area and ain in Aberdeen so as much help need to help me advise and upgrade my family members pc.

ram am not sure on what time and how much the board will take
also if the machine is pre installed or where the manufacturers site for the motherboard is and what drivers i would need if i put on windows xp dont know if there is a cd either

To be honest you only have 2 options. One upgrade the motherboard, processor and ram. The second option is to buy a new base unit.

For option one will probably cost you about £100 for somthing modest, but will leave you with an old low power PSU and only a 40gb hard disk. Also support from microsoft for windows 2000 stops this year which means it wont be safe to use as no updates will be available.

Option two you'll have a new machine with warrenty you will also get xp or vista you can always use the 40gb hard disk from your old machine. Now the bad part is cost, best to look for a good deal on a dell base unit. Or look out for offers at dell outlet. I recently bought a base unit from them when they were doing free delivery and money off. I got a 530s c2d 2.2, 2gb ram, 250gb HD with xp home for £170.

Your better off with one of the Dell base unit deals that keep popping up, which are around £180-£230,

My self built PC, which probably cost over £1K to build is now ancient by todays standards, but to upgrade one part will mean the upgrade of almost everything. A new processor would mean new motherboard, cooler, memory and graphic card. After all that, I'd still have a noisy old PC.

It ain't worth the hassle these days, pains me to say it, but your better buying from the likes of Dell.

:whistling:some good offers on the dab site.

this -…hs1 - looks good for it's money.
if you can afford it, i would upgrade to the E4500 processor, choose Vista Home Premium and upgrade to 2Gb RAM - total cost for this £419.01. For this you get a 250Gb hard drive and you also get a 19" Flat Panel Monitor which you could sell on fleabay if you don't need it - should recoup £80-100ish of your outlay.
if you leave everything as it is, but change to XP Home, total cost is £359 - again, you can sell the monitor.

another option is the AMD route -…dhs - If you can, upgrade to Vista Premium - total cost £299, but no monitor with this one.

I'm surprised that I couldn't find a decent system cheaper with Dell - I bought on last July with similar spec for £250 (no monitor) - PM MikeT and see if he knows of one (he is a Dell Genius, but he doesn't work for them!)

Let us know how you get on and what you actually buy!!!

update - have just seen this thread -…io/

might be worth a look!
