pc wiring to motherboard question im confused

Ok about to add somepics too.

What it is, is that I have had a new mobo for ages with a quad core cpu since my old socket 775 wasnt quad core compatable.

Anyway the only thing holding me back was the case to motherboard connection was different on my old mobo, i.e a single block instead of seperate.

I finally tried filing it down and put new mobo in case but no power is going through to motherboard, the led on back of psu is on but no power goes to the button at front so maybe its wired wrong.

    Pics up in minute

I was thinking the same, there is no need to file any of the connectors.

From the sound of it, if the connectors have been filed to fit (assuming it is the main psu connector) then the power supply is the wrong type for the mother board.

This would most likely have ended up with the wrong voltages being applied to the wrong ciriuts resulting in their destruction.

We would need to see pictures of which connector that has been filed to see if it can be fixed.

I think you are getting mixed up, im talking about the wires from case to motherboard not the psu to mobo which works fine and I know the mobo works since I tried it in a different case.

    Fixit tool,
Hard to see from the pics but it may be easier to get a new case they are reasonable, most have single connectors

Yeah was thinking of that, then I can sell my old pc since I have changed everything in it and wanted 64 bit Vista anyway, but until then.

You need to split the connector up - but better photos would help (do you not have a camera with a macro mode?). An easy option would be to find a really old, unused case and cut the connectors off that (or some cables would also do - old analogue CD-audio cables etc) and reconnect to the relevant wires (ideally soldered)...

Already did, at least one part since the rest pretty much crumbled.

Since the red and black one was for the power switch I connected it to the power pin on the mobo, nothings going through and im not sure what the cable in middle is

"Scratches head" do you have a multi meter you can lay your hands on,

I think you need to set your camera to Macro mode too !! :whistling:

Marco Mode sets the focus to minimal distances for taking VERY close close-ups !

Almost every camera has this mode now ! Even my SE K810i has it !

Look for this symbol on the camera buttons or in the menu's ... it looks like a flower :

PS What do you mean by the power pin? There are two pins on the motherboard that need to be shorted momentarily to turn on (if you have a spare DVD drive or hard disc you can take the jumper off that and use it to short the connection momentarily to check the PC is working okay...)

I do have an old hard drive that is now dead which has a jumper I could use.

Will take a pic of how I have it set up

Hmm could be a possibilty that the mobos fried? since when the psu is connected to mobo nothing happens not even a split second spark ofpowerlike happens with my other mobo.

Take some more pics - do you definitely have all the necessary power cables attached?

Im gonna rebuild old one and see what happens.

Gave it one last try and suddenly it works, not sure what it was but before no power went to mobo and now theres a green light when psu is turned on.

    Strange but it works.

Glad you got it going in the end ............all you have to do now is change that plaster on the end of your finger !!! :-D
