    peeved off with work

well i was looking forward to my week off next week, only to look at the rota tonight and see that ive been put in for my hours. ive had this week approved since 11th january and have my holiday form to prove it. im just worried about the boss snapping my head off tomorrow when i tell her im meant to be off cos shes like that, hates being told shes made a mistake. i cant just work it cos ive made appointments for then thinking i was off. then to top things off i told my senior she had put me in and he said 'i dont give a f___' normally we get on really well but his attitude stunned me. its not the attitude a senior should have and i dont know whether to put a complaint in or if it would make things difficult at work. other workers heard him say it too. im stressed enough without this on top.
what would yous do in this situation? how would you approach the manager (bearing in mind shes unapproachable to start with) and would you complain about the seniors attitude?

if i had my holiday booked and had the form to prove it had been booked as you do i would just not turn up

dont tell her and just take the week off, say you didnt look at the rota as you had booked the week off when she rings to find out where you are lol hope you get it sorted, aslong as you got proof she said you can have it then dont worry.

or if you will feel guilty about leaving them short staffed, just say ive noticed you have put me down for next week but ive actually booked it off.

Let them sort it out when they find you aren't in because your on holiday

just go up to her and tell her, sometimes people higher up in the workplace think they can push you about if they have this attitude, dont stand for it or it wont stop there trust me i know

people know i saw the rota and also the senior would say so cant just not turn up. this happens nearly everytime i book a week off. its getting beyond a joke now

photocopy your form and leave it with a note on her desk when your next in.

Just say I think there has been a mistake as I've booked the weekoff and have plans and can't work anymore.

Guessing you work in a retail environment.

just tell them what is what and show them your form, dont get bullied at work if they force you too come in. Be firm but polite and say no you wont come in because you have booked days offs and that is that

does your form have your manager's signature to approve it? if so, take it in and they don't have a leg to stand on..

i wouldn't just 'not turn up' - that would cause far too much hassle then it's worth. if they ask you to work anyway, just say sorry and you've already made arrangements which would cost you to not attain.

i thought they could still not give you your hols as long as they arrange them for another time? and yeah the form is signed

You need to learn to stand up for yourself, if someone spoke to me like that they would wish they never had. They cannot sack you for taking authorised holidays and if they do, you have proof and a signature, so don't turn up and if the worse comes to it ask your colleagues to help you in the tribunal.

i would of thought they would have to give you some notice if they were going to cancel it as imagine if you had booked a holiday abroad you would lose alot of money.

im too stressed to stand up for myself at the minute, hence the reason i dont want any hassle from this or my manager having a go as i will only end up a blubbering wreck

no havent booked holidays away, just doctors and opticians appointments. this happened a few weeks ago with another colleague and the manager ended up arguing with her and saying she couldnt have them. she did get them in the end but i cant be done with confrontation at the minute

You didnt look at the rota cos you were off that week. And lol at them when they discover their mistake.

Do you have a personnel/HR dept or is it just a small individual home? If you have an HR dept, it could be worth taking the matter up with them.

If not, then you really need to speak to your manager with a bit of firmness and assertiveness, but not confrontational.

At the end of the day, your holiday to which you are entitled to has been long since approved and you have made arrangements.

Other option could be to tell them a little porky - for example say you think your OH or parents have organised a "surprise" trip away, or something along those lines.

they have had since january to arrange someone to cover your hours, its not your fault if they havent or have overlooked it. dont stress yourself out over it, if they know you have looked at the rota then just ask them why you are down to work as you have the holiday form to say you were approved to have it off and have made other arrangements.

Or look for another job where you are treated a bit better and are more valued, as opposed to working for some jumped-up tinpot boss.

i work in a home and my boss sounds like your boss, i understand what your saying, my boss has her teachers pets who get away with murder but if me or others spoke to her how they do then we would be in trouble. if the worst comes to the worst go to the doctor and get a sicknote for stress, if they treat you like crap give them a taste of their own medicine lol i know its hard sometimes as i dont like confrontation, ive only ever stood up to my boss when she really wound me up about some stupid course i didnt attend.

i havent had a sick day for over 2 and a half years so i cant do that. worst comes to worst i'll have to cancel my appointments and work it. i really need this week off though and wont know when i will eventually get one. so stressed with other things that i need a break to get myself pulled together

if you want to provide me with her telephone number and the details necessarry i will happilly ring up and discuss this with your manager?

it's so crap to be in that kind of position under terrible management, if you can afford to walk it sumtimes its more desireable, sending an email or leaving a note could well be your best bet, just be firm in what you write

they wont be able to try pressure you into something instantly,

you have had this time booked off and you have allready made commitments which cannot be changed so it is regrettable :P but you will have to take the time off

you dont need to tell them what commitments they do not need to know your details its kind of as simple as that

aww really hope you get it sorted, if they say you have to work it, could you maybe compromise and say well i will do what i can but im not cancelling my appointments and just work the days you arnt busy or go in before/after your appoinments, i know you shouldnt have to but might be something to think about, and also i would ask when you can have a week off and get it approved right away so then they cant say there fully booked etc.

I'm not sure how it works with care homes privately owned. However CQC are not only there to assess for quality for patients but for staff too. You need to report your senior to CQC for talking to you in that fashion. Too many private care homes can get away with treating staff like crap, I don't understand why they get away with it. Also if your manager refuses your leave tell her you will be taking it and take it further, someone above her? If there is no one contact CAB for advise.

Sounds like its pretty common for care homes, my OH works at one and gets treated like dirt by the management. I've told her to just do her job for now and keep looking for anything else.

What does your contract of employment state in relation to annual leave?

As long as you are within the terms of your contract then there is little they can do about you taking leave. Annual leave is as much a Health & safety requirement as it is anything else these days. If you have booked it off & it has been approved, then as much as the manager wants to sound off, that is all they can do. Any form of disciplinary action & the law would be on your side.

I understand you don't need the hassle & stress of an argument with your boss, but if you give in on this one then it sounds like they have got you where they want you.

Happens when you have a minimum wage job.

I normally get on really well with the senior in and out of work so don't want to create an atmosphere but he has really upset me with his comment. I might just see how he is with me tomorrow and consider whether to complain or not then. As for the manager I'm just gonna have to try catch her when she's not busy, which is almost impossible. Also stressing cos I'm only in 2 more days as got weekend off so need it sorting straight away

only options would be to take the holiday as you have booked it, they cant sack you for taking a approved holiday.
if you do decide to work it, for some strange reason, make sure you get them to agree another week off there and then as a work around to working your holiday, get it singed as you did in january and when that holiday is due remind them at the beginning of the month that you are off then but dont agree to anything too far down the line, as you sound like you could do with a break from it all ASAP

    Shut up!!!

You are NOT working it and you are NOT cancelling any appointments!
They have had plenty of time to sort cover out. Just point out that you have leave booked and you made plans when they were approved, and you can't change them. You're probably stressing over nothing. If they wanted you to cancel them I'm sure they would have spoken to you. I'm sure it's just an oversight and there will be no problem when you remind them.

Some people are not strong minded & that's what the weak bullies look for.My bigger problem would be that the OP said her OH works in the same place & so has he not got a pair.

Dont say anything and have your holiday, they cant do **** if you have a signed holiday form.
If you go asking questions they may say its an error and tear up the holiday slip, just act dumb lol.

when you go back after your holiday take in your signed slip and your done, btw photocopy the slip so it doesnt "GET LOST" also you will have proof it they dock your pay.

place i work for doit all the time so dont worry, its there cockup.

edit: I would say that you need to stick up for yourself, if he gives attitude give it back he cant do anything aslong as you dont get physical, once he knows you will stick up for yourself he will probably respect you more.
If that dont work make a complaint about sexual harassment and its bye-bye mr senior

You're a doormat OP, you need to change that or just accept the crappy life that comes with being walked on. Don't think winning this one fight will solve your issues, you need to make some deep changes in the way you see yourself and how others see you. Easiest way is to find a new job ASAP, this lot already see you as a pushover so will resist change on a subconscious level, that's a fight you don't need.
