People who dial the wrong phone number

    Hi all

I recently changed my phone number and before id even given it to someone the phone rang. Now everyday guaranteed at 9am to 10am I get about 10 calls, at about 1pm to 2pm I get about the same, and the rest of the day can be on and off. They all are miss dialing a telephone number and thinking my house is a doctors surgery. So far the record for the same person ringing back is 3 times in the space of a few minutes. I also get loads of messages left on BT 1571 telling me about there illness's and how they need an appointment fast :giggle: which can be quite funny sometimes. I could even google my number at first and it showed up on the NHS website :?

In all fareness I dont mind that much, but sometimes I get that peeved Ive been tempted to pick up saying 'hello clap clinic' :-D

Does anyone else get this? are you the local chinese takeaway or the local police station or worse?

Exactly the same, my phone number is one digit different to the Doctors Surgery.

It is amazing what people tell you over the phone, even after you have told them it's the wrong number.:-D

    yes exactly same situation..............

recently changed no, within first day got about 15 calls per day thinking we are a pub

apparently my phone provider recycle nos so i ended up a no previously associated with a pub

obviously old literature belonging to them have my no hence the annoying calls!

    Nearly the same situation...

My number is one (repeating) digit away from the local chinese takeaway. Usually only get 1/2 calls a month.

Most times people hear the Scottish accent and know they have a wrong number, but a few people get a bit shirty about it. With those people I always want to take their "order" and ask them to collect in 20 minutes... be great to turn up at the shop to see the confusion :-D

I used to work for a company with a similar number to the local hospital. We had loads of wrong numbers. The guys in the office had alot of fun with it. One day a man rang enquiring about his daughter and my friend said that they were very sorry but they had to amputate her legs, the dad said 'but she was only in to have her appendix removed'.

    Oh happy days:roll:

My number ends 333. When I first got the number (which I specifically chose for ease of remembering), I used to get Fax machines calling day and night.

All got sorted in the end, with BT contacting those that were calling and getting our number removed from the companies fax machine.

Was a real pain in the backside - particularly when the machines redialed at 4am!!

Agree, totally sick to take advantage of people who are already very stressed.

i agree, wouldnt of appreciated that if it was my child

    edit: i am BRITISH

(by both parents too for those who think that thats what qualifies you)

We have a landline at work which seems to be a recycled number for a certain person...

No-one phones for legitimate reasons, just marketing calls.

So far they won a holiday, the next day, they won a car (which I said they could not pick up due to being on a prize holiday), I wound someone up who was selling stairlifts by advising I was deaf and they would need to shout (really funny, esp after 15 minutes of sales pitch I advised I lived in a bungalow).

Some companies do believe that this person has suffered painful injuries by bathing with a toaster, swimming with aligators and transgender operations.

    All in good fun.

inn regards to the op tho, gotta feel bad for those who leave messages and dont get a reply if its medical, wonder if the surgeery get stick for that when they didnt even get the message to begin with

I despair of the fact that anybody is that stupid that they think that they would divulge that sort of information over the phone.

Whenever I have rang recently regarding my parents who have had very serious illnesses, all they say is 'they had a good night'.

    Stop taking everything so seriously.

Ahh, just think how pleased the guy would be when he finds out that his daughters legs have not been amputated..... have a sense of humour guys, its all we have, that cannot be taken from us!!

I have one digit away from local chinese, I sometimes take there order and say yeah be with you in 30 mins.

We have number recognition on our phone, and a guy that has been trying to sell us something that the wife showed a very slight interest in (big mistake) he then has called every night for the last 2 weeks. I finally picked up the phone and did the 'hello........hello......hell...ooo......hello....' response, pretending I cant hear him, he hasn't called back.

Believe me, I don't take everything "so seriously". I am sorry your parents have been unwell. I don't think you would have seen the funny side if someone had played a prank at that time.

It is harmless leading someone astray when phoning for a chinese. Different ball game to take advantage of a worried relative.

People with health problems are often panicky, terrified, confused, and can behave out of character. It is very easy in those circumstances to dial incorrectly, however annoying it is for those that have to put up with it. If that makes them "stupid" then I despair at a lack of compassion and understanding.

My friend's parents suffered several months being contacted by people wanting to pay their driving penalties.

But it would have been hilarious if they had told you they just had their legs amputated though.

There are things where black humour is very funny. I dont think this is one of them. I bet you would have felt well chuffed if the guy on the end of the phone dropped dead with a heart attack.

Now what are you trying to say? That Hospitals dont give out bad news? If someone rings up to enquire, are you now trying to say they are going to lie? Get real.

As others have said, pranking a call for a Chinese takeaway is one thing, causing unnessecary stress and panic is a pretty callous thing to do. You should be thoroughly ashamed, not boasting how "funny" you are.

It wasn't me that answered the phone.

Take in what you have read and you would know that.

Any hospital that gives bad new over the phone has no idea.

As I say, I have never heard of of any cases of this so unless anyone verifies the poor service of your local hospital then I will continue to believe that this will never be the case.

I have 5 family members in different hospitals at the moment and none of these will give out any information other than the 'they had a comfortable night' etc that I said. Even if they had a rotten night as my my mum said the last visit. Even she laughed that they had said that. Althought with cancer she should have been expected to be a miserable cow who wouldn't find it at all amusing.
