    The His Dark Materials trilogy!!!!!

All of Jeremy Clarksons books are very funny.

If you haven't read them before, I highly recommend some Dan Brown - The ones I'm thinking of would be:

Angels and Demons (his best book, read this first)
    The Da Vinci Code
    Deception Point
    Digital Fortress

4 great books, which can be picked up pretty cheaply Should keep you going for a while!

I love reading, but mainly read ****, 'chick-lit' i belive it might be called, i'm a bloke though!!

Recently i thought like you and tried to read lord of the flies, but i gave up after a few days, went back to reading what i enjoy.

Mike Gayle is my favourite author at the moment, just read "Wish you were here" in about 2 days.

Moral of the story, read what you want to read, not what other people 'think' you should read

    biff and chip

    Anything by :
    Stephen King
    James Herbert
    Dean Koontz

Norman Finkelstein - great read! also Noam Chomsky and Jeff Blankfort are great reads

I read ebooks on my phone during my commute in. This way I never forget my book, I am never inconvenienced by the bulk of the book and it is never too dark to read as it is backlit. Prices of ebooks are quite good too. The software you need to read them is either ereader or mobipocket, I would recommend either fictionwise.com or booksonboard.com as good ebook retailers.

The boy in the striped pyjamas is an awesome read

Actually I loved the Harry Potter books... After years of avoiding them and labelling them as boring and childish, I read all of them from the first to the last in the space of a week not long after the final book came out... Everyone I knew was into them (including the girlfriend - That's who I borrowed the books from ;)) and was spellbound (pun somewhat unintentional), I couldn't put them down!

In conclusion, don't knock it til you've tried it, and give into peer pressure when it won't do you any harm :P

On the Road by Jack Kerouac.

    Made me want to travel.

    Mr Nice by Howard Marks

Spike Milligans Bio - you will laugh until you cry

The rather fruity one that was on the Graham Norton show this morning at about 01:00 (those who wathced it will know which one I mean)...

    kama sutra !

The Dave Pelzer books are amazing books, although like you said, shocking and disturbing. I wasn't overly keen on the last book in the series.

Thanks for this thread, it has given me loads of ideas for new books to read

Don't read the Dan Brown stuff. It really is terrible, terrible rubbish.

Most ot the recommendations here have been really good. Just not the Dan Brown ones! I have read all four and will never be able to get that time back again.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Great book!!

I'll second that - best book I've read in the last 10 years.

If you like sci-fi then try Battlefield Earth by L.Ron Hubbard. Don't let the film version put you off, the book is epic.

And finally for a page turning (if somewhat cheesy at times) try anything by Clive Cusller. I started with Atlantis Found but they are all worth a read if you want something not too demanding.
