of course they can... and they do.

EDIT: and no its not right

    r u jfk in disguise . .

    you could always recycle it

a dog isnt just for valentines day

If they can get a vet to go along with it then Yes. Don't agree with it but it happens.

I don't think it's right. I'm not a dog lover - but I'd never want a dog put down like that

why would some one want to do this, take it to the dogs home so it can be found a good home,if they do have it put down they will have me to deal with.:x

    No, no, no!!! :-(

Re-home, maybe... but 'put down' NO! :x

I dont know what to feel about this... my initial feeling is to be disgusted and repelled but i dont know if this is accepted practice.. the dog was only about 6months old.. :-(

    imranmaz;4411392

the vet said it was an option... because the dog was causing problems … the vet said it was an option... because the dog was causing problems with an existing dog...the owner exercised this option

The dog was only a pup and could have been trained. Putting it down should never have been an option imo.

    i cant hehe

    awwwww  thats mean

    put the owner down

Oh no!!! Isn't that the pup in the show us your pet thread??? :-(

    And he's gone.....?

aaaw look at those trusting eyes, how could they:cry:

and you let her do it?:?

I would guess it's going to come down to whether the individual vet would carry it out or not, I don't know of any legal issue preventing it happening if it's carried out humanely. There's obviously other reasons aside from health for putting a dog down such as aggressive behaviour although from reading your post I'm assuming you're thinking of a healthy dog with no serious personality problems.

As to whether it's right or not, I definitely don't think so although it's easy for me to say that as the only dog we've had to rehome was a lovely dog who we found another owner for quite easily (we had to rehome him as he wasn't fitting in with our dog and family, they saw each other on a fairly regular basis and much happier that way) A very small part of me thinks that at least they took the dog to the vet, I think the worst cases are when people abandon their entirely healthy dog with no severe issues by taking it out, tying it up somewhere and leaving it. Given the loyalty dogs have this just utterly appalls me thinking of the poor animal waiting for its owner to come back and pick it up, I've no idea how people can do this.

There's no way I could take a healthy dog to the vet to have it put down simply because he was unwanted or not fitting in.

    here he is :-(:

the owner of that sofa needs to be put down :whistling::w00t:

i say ur gf needs putting down

    imranmaz;4411512

yeah i think so... i've posted pics of him before... :-(

    :cry::cry:

    I am genuinely gutted........ :-(

awwwww  pls don't show any more pics
    i feel really sad :-(

My friend is a vet nurse and she told me that yes they can. And they can even do it even if the vet or staff member offer to take the dog themselves. They're legally bound to do what the owner wants them to do which is sad.

everyone says the gf needs putting down don't forget the vet aswell who went along with it. they should of said no or mentioned rehoming etc.

yeah but, but if you decide you dont want her anymore, feel free to put her down!

The vet would have been legally bound to do what the owner wanted, the vet probably could see that it was a healthy dog and didn't need to be put down but had to because that's what the owner said they wanted.

    its an outrageeeeeee!

shocking i didnt think a vet would do such a thing tho bottom line it was your gf that made the decision should be banned from keeping annimals

my workpal sat 2 hours at 11pm last nite with a fox he saw dragging its flat back legs across the road.

u guys treat a dog like its ur son/daughter, back in my homeland its a feast for 5! hahhahahaha

The vet or vet nurse or whoever can say to the owner 'I will take your dog home with me if you don't want it' and the owner can insist that they want the dog put down.

I was shocked when I found out and even more shocked when I learnt that my friend was actually having to do it. So apparently vet nurses can put down animals too!

I suppose it didn't suffer and you cannot guarantee it would be rehomed succesfully but it does seem very harsh.......I have had dogs put down before, one had severe behavioural probs and had been rehomed about 10 times, the other put one of the kids in hospital (don't panic she was 19 at the time). It broke my heart both times but was the right thing to do.

    +1

I am so sorry to see this Imran. I know that you were really fond of the little rascal.

So as to the OP, can they - yes and often, hard as it seems, it's the best way. I know that loads of people have super rescue dogs, so it's a hard thing for me to say but there are so many dogs that rather than risk the dog 'failing' again and ending up abused, it might be the best course of action. The proper way to re-home is through a breed re-homing charity where you pay and they get the 'ideal' new owners and update on how the dog is getting on.
Is what your G/f's mum did right? No. it isn't. She should have said right from the start that she wasn't prepared to have another dog. They all act the same - mouthing and jumping and barging into the older dog and seemingly making its life a misery. This is puppy behaviour - totally predictable.
(He's about 10 weeks old I would say in that pic Imran.)
The older dog probably either ignored him or warned him off when he was fed up with it.
Speakingly totally honestly, because I can see his pic ( as I've seen him before) and he looks such a little smasher, your G/f should have planned better.

    This is awful.

it seems that alot of ppl have a BONE to pick with ur gf imran

i think we should just PAWS for a moment before we critique any more, we dont know this womans circumstances fully.

i dont think its very fair to say to imran "u shud put ur gf down" thats pretty mean and not what he wants from this thread, infact everyone who said that imo is PEThetic.

    calm it ppl

    Tough!

i think it is awful that it is an option, she should have thought of what a puppy would be like before she got one. it might not have ended up dead then.

A guy at work was looking after a mates dog while he went off travelling, he was gone longer than he said he would so he took the dog to the vet and had it put down. He laughed when he told me, I thought it was disgusting, he looks after dogs as a job.
