You say "sorry mate I'm busy, got to get on with this" and palm him off to someone else

how long has he been there ?

Yeah I've got a similar guy who just started at work, constantly asking questions, but not only that he contantly tells people what he's doing or what's happened to him in the last hour.. It's almost as if he needs constant reassurance.

I pretty much go with the 'sorry mate, i'm really busy right now' line... But you're right it is difficult to deal with! I find it terribly irritating!

give him the wrong answers to the questions so he gets the work wrong and then gets fired.

simples.

I don't understand, it's not your job to tell him, why not just say what anybody else would "sorry, could you have a go yourself or check with XXX if you still don't know as I have a lot to get done?".

ignore him for a few days and see how he gets on and that will see if he allready knows the answers
and tell the boss the truth that your unsure if he's wasting your time

Hmm. Not sure. I have never had to deal with anything like this as I have my own room.

Tricky!

Then you need to confirm with your direct superior what your role is with the individual. You have appraisals I assume.

Just be firm but polite and explain that his constant interruptions are distracting you adn that if he has any questions he should write them all down and ask you all of them once you can spare the time.

He'll soon get fed up with writing them down and will gradually work things out himself.

Maybe hes just lonely lol

As I have been a regional manager and have previously had many employees like your annoying employee. I found that the the right and PC way to do things would be to make a list of all the points that irritate you and what type of things he is asking you. This will assist you in preparing a line of attack!!!

Are you his line manager? if so, then take 15 minutes aside and tell him i.e I would like a chat with you at 10am today, is that okay?

ask him HR type of questions such as
how is it going at work? do you find your struggling with anything? do you have any training or coaching needs? etc

to cover your own back just in case he makes a complaint about your lack of support (if any), make sure you send him an email at the end of the conversation that he is happy in role, knows what hes doing, needs little support etc..obviously not making anything up but ensuring you have asked these questions. Its basically a minute of meeting with responses and points raised. I would also run this past HR if you are unsure.

This man is not old, he just has no aspirations and just sounds as though he is a clock watcher wasting his own time and yours.

My previous role was very challenging and like you every second was important so useless lazy people made the day worse. There are a few options.

1 - get everyone to buddy with someone in your team where they assist each other for any assistance
2 - try to do it themselves and if they cant and ask your help you tell them to show you what they have done to try to do it themselves. Your not his mother or father and its a work situation.......use your initiative...
3 - always throw it back at them, tell him not to ask you for help unless he can show you what he has done to try to tackle it himself. make sure that you tell him that its for his development and progression in the role.

there are so many things you can do but make a note in your diary about everything he asks as he sounds lilke trouble

if he turns things in to a joke, just say something like ..........your at work and you have lunch and break times to crack a joke. or make a note and bring it up in his otom.

I hope this helps and i know that i have waffled abit but people like him rile me.......

Are you his superior, If so never shout out anyone in front of other members of staff, I know how I would react to being giving a telling off in front of other members of staff, not good my friend.

Be honest mate, tell him you have your work to be getting on with and he is taking up to much of your time but if you think it is going to end up in raised voices then do it privately.

DONT IGNORE HIM.....that will damage your chances as a manager ................

you need to ask him if its important, can it wait, can you try yourself and I will be with you in 15 minutes, if it doesnt work you can tell me what you've tried.

give him a training booklet and get him to write down what he is asking your help on in and the answers so he can refer back to it when he needs assistance on the same topic again.

your actually helping him in the long run.

I bet he is just testing you to see if you know the job as well as he does! He could be undercover to see how good you are. As for the quite old at 45! Im really offended by that!
Its easy just to say that you are sorry but can you just get on with your job!

I stopped reading after that and went to knit some shreddies
