UK Government and Parliament Petition - Ban fireworks for general sale to the public.

97
Posted 3rd NovEdited by:"Emmalu"
Every year more and more people, animals and wildlife get hurt by fireworks. It’s time something was fine to stop this. There are enough organised firework groups around for us to still enjoy fireworks safely so please help me stop the needless sale of them to the public.
At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament

Parliament now will consider this for a debate as this has now passed the required 100,000 signatures.

Like my own fireworks
We enjoy watching our neighbour's fireworks. Saves us buying our own!
Awe we love a little box of our own on Bonfire night with a good old Catherine wheel & traffic lights etc in our back garden, kids hate big displays because of the loud bangs

One reason for retaining the availability of fireworks to the public: a list of nominees for the Darwin Awards.

There are organised displays you can attend.

You only have to google firework injuries to see how dangerous they can be.

I don’t want to upload any pics as I feel they are too graphic for here.

My concern is the injuries they can cause.

Injuries? It's the noise pollution and I'm talking all 52 weeks of the year round here.

If it saves just one child from permanent disfigurement I would be happy,

I’m not too fussed about the noise.

every week round here. Some times midnight and later. Wedding parties.
In England last year, 4,436 individuals attended A&E because of an injury caused by a firework - more than double the 2,141 in 2009/10.
Not sure I agree with a ban. Think you need to be over 25 with hefty fine or worse for misuse. And restrictions on when they can be used. I hate fireworks myself but tighten the sale and use see what happens.

I went to a display at my uncles’ house, he was much older and didn’t have much of a clue. The first two or so went off fine, then the third came shooting off towards us all stood by his house! Luckily we were by the back door so managed to grab his grandchildren out of the way...

I agree there are so many idiots about who don’t have a clue about how to use these correctly, but then there are some people who do. I definitely agree more safety measures need to be in place, like limiting places where you can actually buy these from and perhaps only selling during certain times of the year?

Either way you’re going to annoy some and make others happy
I'm very surprised that they haven't been used to make explosive devices.
The issue really is supermarkets and corner shops selling them to the public, these cheap fireworks go wrong and fall into the hands of muppets where they are misused.

Allowing the sale from specialist fireworks places to public, that don’t sell cheap rubbish should still be allowed.

Glad to see one of the supermarkets have stopped selling them: news.sky.com/sto…464

Cost to much, when you can get fertiliser much cheaper..
Ban pets, that way you don’t have to see dog pooh on the paths all year round instead of fireworks once a year..

Ban knives, cars and alcohol too they cause more deaths and injuries than fireworks. Stupid idea

Op, where is the contextual detail that validates your opening statement regarding increased numbers year on year of hurt to people, animals & wildlife please!? ..because it sounds fishy wifey without detail!?
For you to say what you did you must have a valid source rather than Facebook type scaremongering right!?
It reeks of bull.

Hmm, anyone for black market fireworks?

Probably not by percent use wise though.

How many fireworks are used compared with the others and how many injuries occur.

Fireworks are used far less frequently than all those things you mentioned generally one night of the year

I don’t have evidence to back this up however.

It just seems silly to me in this day and age where everyone is so safety conscious we allow the legal sale of essentially explosives that can cause great harm.

I mean they have label peanuts with may contain nuts as people seem to have zero common sense.

You mean someone has to have the catherine wheel nailed to their body currently!? ..no wonder A&E figures are up, allegedly.

while I sympathise with animal owners ... it does kinda seem like "I have a dog, so nobody should be allowed fireworks". Seems kinda selfish to me, considering its only for a few days a year.

The government will not accept a petition if it contains false statements.

This petition was accepted.

The petition doesn't say "Every year more and more people, animals and wildlife get hurt by fireworks" though.
5th of Nov and Diwali dates are always quite close to each other. At the very least ban their usage after 10pm during the week and 11pm on weekends in residential areas.

It’s not exclusively about pets. It’s about wildlife too. The shock from the fireworks causes them to panic which results in their deaths at times. That’s if the shock doesn’t kill them. The debris left from the fireworks can also be picked up by wild animals too which can cause them harm.

Does this make wildlife selfish too?

A quick check of other petitions shows that's not the case.

For example this one claims a site and IP block is far harder to get around than an account ban:
petition.parliament.uk/pet…087

Or for example this one suggests that the only way a positive result in the reduction of knife crime can be achieved is by changing the sentencing:
petition.parliament.uk/pet…766

Both claims are highly dubious, enough to be called false without strong evidence to the contrary.
