Petition to get shops to stay closed on boxing day

lets go back to the old days

Shops, especially supermarkets, do not need to open on Boxing Day. Whilst not everyone may see Christmas as a religious holiday, it should be respected as such, and retail workers (who work so hard on the run up to the big day) given some decent family time to relax and enjoy the festivities like everyone else. Most retail workers are on the go up to Christmas Eve, then back on Boxing Day. Sometimes they have no choice. We managed 30 and 40 years ago...when shops were sometimes shut for a whole week. Let's get back to the way it was. Forget making money for one day, let's concentrate on making more memories with the ones we love.

Hmmm boxing day sales are something of a 'tradition' miles
would prefer one to stop them opening Christmas day,New years day,Easter Sunday
and more importantly pay the staff extra if they do have to work !

we will have to agree to disagree on this one, the Tradition is relatively new about 20yrs I think

surely thats for other people to decide. i think staff should get extra for these days, but if shops decide to open then surely thats for their decision. theyve already paid their rent and rates and people have cash. if supermarkets closed for 2 days, there would be an uproar. you only got to go to supermarkets or christmas eve to see the panic on peoples faces because its gonna be shut for 1 day

Boxing day sales a tradition? That's rubbish! It used to be January sales, then retailers saw the need to bring it forward to entice people away from their homes and into shops over the festive period. I work in retail and I find the whole festive period a nightmare. Would it kill people to have to wait one more day for the chance to shop the sale? I don't think so.

Let's repeal Sunday trading so we can all spend the day in the park feeding the ducks.
And while we're at it let's turn off the Internet on Sundays so we can get some peace in the park.
Doesn't Theresa May have a remote control in her handbag for doing that?

WTF is that about miles it was the tories who changed the Sunday trading laws in 94'

Will it be a non-issue when all the shops are self service anyway? I don't think we are far away. Still not over the shock of Poundland being self service.

That's a fair point, fortunately the retailer I work for don't open on Easter Sundays. The big issue I have with the Christmas period is that retailers demand their staff to work more hours in order to get prepared. I will be working late Christmas eve just to get the store ready for boxing day which will be an early start!

what made us a nice country has been eroded over the years (in b4 "you think the country has gone down hill because we open shops on boxing day) this is just one example

Boxing day was always spent at my Nanas house over the day most of the family would call in, now it is impossible, because ppl must get to the shops because there is 30% off this and that

Nice things have been replaced with greed on both sides

I know its mental and MSK will have another headache, but I would love us to return to some of our values, things as they once were, you do not have to believe in god to go to church, mosque or temple, but you do get a good education about doing things the right way, being polite, tea at 4 lol, rooting for the underdog, ....... going to other countries taking them over, introducing propper admin systems... look at the state of some of the former collinies!!!

What's the point in a petition? If u don't want shops to open on boxing day then don't go shopping on boxing day. If its not cost effective for shops to be open, then they soon won't be.

Commercialised festive season to me these days. I cureently work in a department that has to be open christmas day any day really regardless of what day it is festive or not but not retail *anymore thankfully * personally I would like to see the big chains closed for the day so family time can be family time. People can still shop online of they want a shopping fix. I've worked retail and Christmas was the busiest time of year, long hours. It never felt like a celebration as you knew the madness of boxing day returns and crazy manic shopping. Again only my personal opinion.

Don't know if serious but I totally agree. The seemingly accepted 24/7 work ethos pushed by the fatcats and worked by minimum wage plebs (me) is a scurge on society.

Should personnel employed by the Emergency Services, those within the Security Services, & Border Control workers also expect to take a Public Holiday?

no as they are needed at those times, and in my experience most of the small traders and self employed stay closed on boxing day and new years day

I very much doubt that any business will suffer substantially due to not trading for just one day especially if all the competition are also shut.
The one area where the small businesses might struggle to compete though is that the bigger companies will still be making big sales on Boxing Day via the web. In that case the smaller local shop with a low web profile will lose out but it's just one day and the sales are more than that.

kids love going to town on boxing day to spend their Xmas cash so I'm out as they say in the den.

Filling station attendants... those in logistics/haulage transporting goods to supermarkets for the day after Boxing Day... public transport drivers... hospital staff... engineers on standby at the National Grid... the list goes on...

miles136

what about the 999 services they have to work lol

Yeah, what about us 999ers!? Haha, it should be entirely up to the staff I think, no pressure from management team which I know would never happen. Some people are happier working bank hols for the extra pay etc. When I used to work in retail we got treated like dirt by management who for some reason thought they were the Britney Spears of cheap clothing and accessories and that kids aged 16-19 who worked for them were just there to be belittled!
