Peugeot 307 Rear Main Light Issue

Really weird issue here...

My rear left main light is out. So I took the bulb out and swapped it with the rear right main light to confirm the bulb was dead...

Rear right doesn't work in rear left, and rear left doesn't work in rear right! The only thing that does work is the rear right light with its original bulb.

I thought maybe it was the bulb holder that was corroded, but surely then the left bulb would have worked in the working right one?

Also, the main rear lights seem different in size... the connector is the same but the bulb itself is bigger in size on the rear right... do you have to buy a specific 'left' or 'right' bulb?

Thanks. Apologies if you now have a migraine!

Has the car been in an accident, before you had it perhaps?

No don't think so. I've had it for 14 months now.
Dont like to be the bearer of bad news but the position lamps on peugeots work through the ecu. I had this problem with a car i was working on with the front position lamps. Had to go to the dealer and was about 400 quid to sort. Hope its not the case with yours but bear it in mind
Maybe the rear right bulb has been forced into the bulb holder and forced the contacts wider and it's just luck the contacts of the bulb holder make contact with that bulb.

Try new bulbs, You might need a new bulb holder for the right side if you change that in the future or change like for like and it may work.

Ouch, I'd get the soldering iron out and tap into the working side.

Very strange indeed. You could go to Halfords, play dumb, pay for the fitting service and see if they can figure?
Thanks. Yeah going to Halfords tomorrow I think.
How old is the car ?
i have a 307cc which has similar issue (common issue, google it). mine was temperamental wiring. try tracing the wiring from light cluster and wiggling it. also seem to recall something about light for rear registration plate causing issue with rear light so check those as well. good luck
someone probably put in the wrong size bulb before on one side and know that side my have a messed up holder and won't work with the correct bulb check what is supposed to be correct size and try that on the one u need fixing but u can look at a bulb and tell if it's gone.

as long as it marking on the bulb with r5w 12v, it should be the same because the glass part of the bulb can be either dome shape or shape like a round head bullet.
(see links for more info)

this is what i replace my peugeot 307 1.4 se tail light bulb with last week.

07 Peugeot's are well known for dodgy earth's on their rear light clusters. Run a separate earth wire and/or give the connector a good clean with electrical cleaner and use a straightened paper clip (or similar) to clean the female part of the connector.

307's also have a bizarre thing that If one of the number plate light bulbs is blown it can stop one or more of the rear lights working, had that issue on my Wife's 307cc
The front tail light had gone too which made Halfords think it was a fuse which they couldn't do.

A garage replaced the fuse this morning for me. Which was weird as he didn't get one from anywhere, but the faulty one was left with me?!
