took my 1 year old son to the doctors today and they have given him antibiotics, just went to give him some and noticed that the exp on the bottle is 03/2009!!
Taking them back tomorrow and going to have a right go at the doctors!

You mean the pharmacist. The Doctor only prescribed he drugs I assume.

    Seems a liitle odd though.

It's not a manufactured date is it?

Odd they have them, always had to take prescription to chemist.

I always check expiry date of medicine before I take.

Disgraceful - write a letter instead of going in - sometimes a letter has more impact and has to be dealt with - i.e. on the complaint side of things.

If you live in a village or the surgery is a good distance from towns - they may have a pharmacy in-house - like mine

It's not the date it was made is it

we/i never give out medication , write a script yes but never give out medication ,

I'd think it was the manufacture date.
It's directly above the expiry date usually..

The pharmacist gave me antibiotics(amoxycillin) for my daughter that were out of date. All she said was that the medicine might not be effective as it could be.

yes I live in a village so the doctors have a pharmacy in there

sorry yes meant the pharmacy at my doctors gave me the medicine

did the doctor give you the medication or a pharmacist? EDIT - you just answered this x

are you sure its the expiration date and not just the manufacturers date... is there another date on the packaging?

antibiotics need to be fully effective, or you risk the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotics, i cant see why a pharmacist would deliberately give out of date meds.

    oh dear !!!

They probably giving lots of people it,I'm certain this stuff in a bottle is just powder then they mix it with water,so you think they notice the label on the bottle more as I'm certain it needs mixing before dispensing out.

Whilst agreeing that it is very unproffesional to distribute out of date drugs I don't believe 'having a right go at them' is the right way to go about a complaint.

A calmly written complaint would be much more appropriate.

plus a polite phone call - your little one needs some medicine

...what good do you think "a right go at" is going to achieve?

Be diplomatic and realise that the person you are going to castrate probably isnt going to be responsible for this error.

    Mistakes happen.

Please change your title to Pharmacist or make it to GP Surgery, rather than blaming a doctor. Believe me this might be the next daily mail headline!

( gregs and mrs patches )yes agree with above two posts , well put and not good to have a go at the med professional that deals with you and family
by all means write a strongly worded yet polite letter of complaint to practice manager and will be dealt with im sure

I was really annoyed but OH took it back to the chemists, as I was dealing with a sick baby. I don't think it was much out of date maybe a month, definitely not by a year.

I have been thinking and they probably won't beleve that this was given to me, as my son has a problem with his lung and has had about 6 courses ofantibiotics since he was born,

They gave me 2 lots as he has to be on them for 10 days, so I am using the other bottle first, so don't need this one till next week, thankfully so will take it back tomorrow and get them to change it

Yes this is just the powder one and has to be mixed with water

Just had to have a little rant about this as I was quite shocked when I see it was out of date, I will be having a calm word with them tomorrow, they know me down there because of sons problems, and they are very helpfull being in a smallish area

Exactly. Go back being diplomatic and you'll get a good response, go in all guns blazing and you won't

You are bound to be upset or angry. I hope it works out for you.

OP says 1 year out of date but the the exp on the bottle is 03/2009!! Surely that is only 3 months?

6 lots in a year is a lot specially if for same thing each time.
If I was you,I be asking to see a paed or something.

I hope he is OK - nothing worse than your baby being poorly

I'm sure the " 1 yr old" refers to the child's age.

I can see why the Mum feels upset about this. She has to trust these professionals to treat her son with competence and respect.

'a right go' is just a figure of speach, I say it all the time but I really mean I am going to adress the issue..... Its just the way I talk, and others!

    Hope you sort it

Anyway to those that commented. Its a mums job to worry and be protective, I too would be annoyed. Its what mums do best

lol...... the childs one year old not the medicine......you don't work in that pharmacy do you?????????

Why not just wait until the morning, point out their error and get a new batch, or listen to their explanation as to why it has been incorrectly labeled?
