Need a bit more info on what you have signed up to.

Going on what you have said when you use nokia maps and when/if it needs map detail when you zoom in to places on the map, if that detail has not already been stored on the phone it will utilise your data information to get the information from the internet.

So i guess you have probably been billed data charges.

i originally had 200 minutes and 400 texts, then my contract was coming to an end and said i wanted a better contract or ill leave.
Now ive got 600 minutes, 1000 texts and unlimited internet. and i asked the woman about the internet ('cos of the high charges normally) and she said its free for things like facebook and emails etc but if you were to download something then it would charge you.

im on O2

Wagster is right, all the adverts of 'free maps' has a little disclaimer saying the maps are free, but your operator may charge or the data when you download them. Unless your contract includes a certain amount of free data then they will have charged you. Best thing to do is to download the maps via your PC and get them over onto the phone in advance if you're planning a trip as that will save the data costs or modify your contract to include data if you can.

As far as I'm aware the maps themselves from Nokia are free, it only costs when you download them via your phone when data charges are incurred. Also it costs you if you want voice-guided directions too so best to read up exactly what is free on the Nokia and O2 sites.
