pickling onions

Can i just peel then and pop in vinegar, two years ago i did the soak in salt and it stunk my house out for days, i like them real crunchy and would they go soft if i didn't do the soaking in salt

You HAVE to boil them well though, my mother made them but they never tasted as good as the shop sort though, they add other things apart from white vinegar, if you use malt (Sarsons) you will get a much stronger flavour.

i dont boil them, no wonder they went soggy if you boiled them - lol
