Pioneer DCS-370 Home Cinema Surround Sound connecting ipod

    Hi,

Anyone have this system? Do you know if you can connect an ipod to the front USB port and get sound from all 5 speakers?

The answer is no. You cannot use an IPOD via the usb port, as the Pioneer system cannot decode the IPOD library. The only way to connect would be to buy a 3.5mm Stereo jack to Left / Right phono cable and connect this to the Pioneer (assuming the Pioneer has Left / Right phono (red and white) inputs on the back).

As an IPOD only produces stereo sound (2 channel) it is unlikely you could get sound from all 5 speakers unless there are some sound matrixing options on the pioneer.

You would generally not want a stereo source to play through 5 speakers though as it would sound rubbish as it would ruin the sound stage.

    Thanks mate.

At the moment, when I watch Sky with the home cinema kit, it only uses the front 2 speakers.

Is there such a thing as a home cinema system that allows me to watch Sky using all 5 speakers using phono (red and white) leads? Cos am thinking of returning this one and buying one that does allow me to connect ipods and sky with all 5 speakers

    No problems.

Yes, you can get sound from all 5 speakers via Sky if you select Dolby Prologic mode on the Pioneer. You will then get the dialogue through the centre channel, and surround effects from the rear speakers.

Again, there is no benefit from playing a stereo music source (IPOD) via all 5 speakers as you will ruin the soundstage. If you insist on doing this then perhaps the Pioneer has a mode called "All channel Stereo" or similar that will matrix the music through all 5 speakers.

Pioneer are great, think twice before you return it.

Just checked their website. Yeah it looks like that is the limitation of this system. The Dolby ProLogic only works for DVDs and USBs. For Phono connections like ipods and sky, its only 2 speakers through the phono leads.

My next delimma is whether I should return it for something that can use all speakers for phono inputs.

Thanks for your help mate.

From looking at the website, it seems that you can have Dolby Prologic via a stereo source. Double check, as that is a lovely system.
    Surround Modes (+)
    • 2 modes for Surround sources: Auto, Stereo
    • 5 modes for Stereo sources: Auto, Stereo, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II Movie and Music

Yeah I checked that too. I thought you could based on that but on checking, it seems you can only get Dolby Pro Logic from Stereo source from the inbuilt DVD drive or USB port. Anything connected to it only comes out in 2 speakers.

But you convinced me and now I will keep the system cos the sound is amazing with DVDs and definately sufficient when watching Sky.

Cheers again mate. Repped you for your help  What a nice guy!
