Plasma - no more after 2 years???

    Hi

I went into Sony Centre over the lunch-time and the guy was telling me that a new European law means that Plasma TVs will be no more, i.e. they are not green enough and expensive to run. He said that the manuafacturers are not/won't be allowed to produce any more Plasma once the current stock is gone.

Is this true? Has anybody heard this before or is this his way of making me but a SONY Lcd telly?

Since I am in a market for a new telly, I should think carefully before I buy a Plasma or LCD.

doubt it as panasonic main tvs are plasma and the power compustion is not that much higher then lcd

    Absolute nonsense.

Maybe just maybe its Sony thats not making them anymore as their Plasma's suck.

hmm wonder if his comments had anything to do with Sony not making Plasma TVs...

Even if it was true, how would it affect what you buy now?

basically europe is a dictatorship not a democarcy as they love banned things and having overall control of members of the union

Yeah, lets Ban plasma's, then head down the fields and watch a few cows fart that which have then wasted the emissions we have just saved. lol, comical comical people we have making laws.

Ministers in the UK have welcomed this ban, stating that this helps … Ministers in the UK have welcomed this ban, stating that this helps climate change policies and goes a long way in preventing global warming and the residue of lesser carbon foot prints

Lol @ them being so caring . Look closer to home. Planks

I wouldn't worry about it, this will just drive down the price of OLED

cars will never be banned until the last drop of tax has been squeezed … cars will never be banned until the last drop of tax has been squeezed out of the fuel

I meant in choice of cars. If energy efficiency and emissions are important then why can I buy less efficient cars than others.

If I want to buy a power hungry TV I should be allowed, the same as I'm allowed to buy a power hungry car.

Cameron is very close to Arnold Schwarzenegger who has already put a ban in place from 2011 on some of the larger TVs, expect Cameron to follow all the green initiatives Arnold has already implemented.

thats what I was wondering

    i call ********.

Samsung, LG and Panasonic are continuing to make plasma tvs and the likes of the major retailers will be stocking the Panasonic 3D plasmas.

so we have to buy TVs with crap black levels, colour bleed, bad viewing angles and soft plastic screens!

    bad viewing angles screens!

Don't know about the rest but the black on my TV is amazing and viewing angle is well infinitive until I look from behind

They are doing the same with getting rid of Bluray, although it has just arrived on the scene a European Dictator was quoted as saying yesterday that "Ze are Jist Nut Green Enouf"

Samsung amongst others have started putting glossy screens on some of their higher end LCDs to create a seemingly deeper black compared to the matte type screens as used by LG, Sony etc.

Again depending on the spec of the TV, some LCDs and the newer LED backlit jobs can often have a very disappointing black level which is somewhat greyish or even blueish on the LEDs.

as for the angle problems, its mainly down to the cheap TN TFT screens used in budget models.

I still prefer plasma in 42" or above and its very unfair that we should be dictated to this way.
if they are going to ban plasma TVs for being power heavy, then gaming PCs should go to with their 600W or more PSUs powering overclocked quadcores.

I have a standard intel Core2 Duo and it uses 95w just idle, add to that the mainboard, GFX card, optical and hard disk drives too

Sssh do you really want them to ban ya PC ?

    i'll fight them for it!!!

A single Google search used as much electricity as boiling two kettles full of water, where will this crap end ? Are they going to put a tax on pictures of Paris Hiltons nipples ?

The latest 50" Panasonic G20 plasma uses 201W (Based on IEC 62087 Ed.2 measurement method), so less than the 42" LCD in the illustration above. They shouldn't be banning anything, just imposing limits which manufacturers can work to whatever the product. If they managed to make a 150" plasma which consumed just 90W would it be still worthy of restriction by virtue of its product type ?
