    Plasma or an LCD?

    Banned
My next tv would be a plasma or an LCD, however I’m still unsure which one to buy.

Which one do you prefer and what are the main differences between them two apart from both being slim.

    Which is more expensive?

Can you hang both on the walls?

Please help me to decide and also vote on the poll

    Thanks

I've recently been converted to a Plasma fan after years of LCD worshipping. Reason being I think colours (and obviously black) are reproduced far more accurately. LCD either seems too vibrant or too washed out.

LCD is still great though and you don't really get plasma screens in the sub 37" market anyway.

I'd recommend posting this question at avforums.com, they really are very knowledgable over there. (And they just love it when people ask "LCD or Plasma?" ;-))

    From my point of view:
Standard for standard, plasma is more expensive
99% of LCDs or Plasma's are wall mountable.
MBeeching is right mostly with regard to colours and blacks (which make a significant difference)
LCD preferred until Full HD plasma is out and affordable

hotuk do you have SkyHD or a NTL/TW TVDrive?

I went for a 32" Toshiba LCD which looks good but still doesn't dominate my front room.

My friend has a 42" Panasonic plasma that looks amazing. Picture quality is definitely better than my LCD. His Panasonic did cost £1300 compared to the £635 I paid for my LCD though.

The top of the range panny was £900ish iirc before xmas.
Hitachi have a 1080 HD 42" for £1100ish (its 1280x1080 but the 1080 vertical res qualifies it fort the 1080 HD standard despite the official standard being 1920x1080)

I think the most important thing that people realise is Full HD displays make no different at 12feet+ unless the display is over 50inches really, and Full HD 50" Plasma's exist, but are over £3000.

The best option now under £2k imo is the Hitachi and growing number of 1080 HD standard plasma's.

Under £1k I would say its a choice between the 42" 720 HD plasma's and the 42" Full HD LCD's.

Go into a store, make sure they have a HD source for the demo and compare Plasma and LCDs for yourself and see if YOU THINK plasma is worth paying more.

Plasma also uses considerably more electricity than LCD, so if you watch a lot of TV it might make a difference.

No, I don't have SkyHD or NTL, only the normal Sky.

    Indeed a 37" plasma a friend has uses 450watts.

It would be interesting to know how much watts/hour costs etc.

What TV do you have now may I ask?
I have Telewest with a TVDrive and it is nice for SDTV channels over HDMI and for the PVR, Cable concentrates most on VoD HD content not channels, where as SkyHD has 2 sports, 2 movies and bbc and sky1 hd channels, which isn't alot and not worth £120/year + £300 upfront imo, my point being can you wait?

I currently have a Philips 32" widescreen, this tv is still working well so yes I can wait and hopefully prices should come down further

Do you watch football or anything fast paced? If so I would probably go for a plasma.

Don’t really watch football much, only the euro and world cup games.
I like to watch sitcom’s and nature/wildlife programmes.

LCD seem’s to be winning so far – LCD 10 and Plasma 4.

Funnily enough I hadn't even considered the power requirement differences between the two technologies, oops

Well, mine's apparently 261watts (so thankfully not 450!) - how does that stack up against peoples LCD screens?

I voted for LCD becuase iv heard so many horror stories about permanant burning (logos, idents) on the screen.

Hang on, plasma can use less power than an equivalently sized LCD because the backlight of an LCD is constant whilst a plasma draws power as and when needed. There was a test to show that a plasma cost $0.40 less a month to run based on 2 hours of testing per day.
