Play.com 4GB USB flash Drive - help wanted

Found 18th Feb 2008
I recently purchased the above item but cannot get it to work on my PC - it starts to take files for a few seconds and then stops and shows the message - 'Cannot copy file ...: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.' This flash drive works OK on my wife's PC and my other flash drive works OK on my PC. So, it seems that the new flash drive might be OK. Any ideas about the problem and how I might fix it?

try a different USB port perhaps

Is there a little switch on the side of the flash drive? It may be locked stopping you copying files onto it

old pc, not enough power?

running win xp?

Thanks so far but I've tried different ports and there is no switch - not sure how I can check if PC spec sufficient.

Running XP and tried rear slots and slots on adapter, and also rear slots without adapter connected.
Fairly old PC (6 years) but copes fine with other flash drive.

I would say power is your problem, clearly the drive works and is not write protected or you would have problems with the other PC's too.

So 2 options:

1) Buy a new power supply, something 500Watt and above should more than enough.
2) Buy a powered USB hub. A little device that gives you extra USB sockets, but comes with it's own power supply so it wont need power from your computers power supply.

If you don't know what type of power supply you need, then let us know the make/model of your computer and I will try and track it down for you or alternatively something like this: ebuyer.com/pro…329 would be ideal as a USB hub.

USB hub is the perfect idea, not so sure about the psu though, not sure that makes old usb slots increase their power.

Maybe you could borrow a friends powered usb hub before buying one? Remember it has to be powered.

Thanks for all useful comments - will try a powered usb hub as first possibility.
