As far as I am concerned - and things might have changed since my son was at nursery, but every child is entitled to 5 free half days at nursery. I am sure its still the same.

If you are in receipt of working families tax credit you could be entitled to 70% discount on a full time placement at a private nursery. You should look on the net as there will be info - I will try and see what I can find

starting the term after your childs 3rd birthday your entitled to 15 hours free child care, you choose how you want that apportioned.

I thought that all children who were three were entitled to claim for five sessions per week ata nursery or playgroup? It doesnt start till the term after they are three though. so would depend on when their birthday was.

My son has just started school but went to a nursery outside Glasgow (in the local church but nothing to do with the church, if you see what i mean. So not a council one and not a private one either). I paid £40 a term for food, the odd trip out, xmas/halloween/easter parties etc. In March they went to the aquarium at loch lomond and I had to pay an extra fiver for the bus and their snack or something like that.

Forgot to say that some parents put their child into our nursery for 2 days and a private nursery for 3 days because they worked and needed someone to look after their kid all day on those days. I think the private nurseries still accept the council payment as some payment towards fees.

its 5 free 'sessions' not half days

and fees vary from council to council - Glasgow now charge by the hour

From experience you should start them as early as possible in nursery as it helps them alot with social skills etc prior to starting school

I wasnt aware that you could pick and choose what age they went to school - if they are due to go they are due to go

I wouldnt really call it "picking and choosing" - I think that's pretty unfair way of putting it. The decision wont be taken lightly. You can defer your child and they can go when they are 5 and 1/2 or so. I recall a high school teacher telling me that many kids who start at 4and 1/2 struggle when they get to high school. There are a few kids who went to nursery with my son who have deferred until next year.

5 sessions at 2.5hrs each in England.I used to send my youngest everyday between 1 and 3.30pm as then it was easy to get the eldest from school and go along for her from nursery.

She was 3 in March and entitled to the free place the following term starting after Easter. Prior to that,I sent her to nursery for 2 X 2.5 sessions a wk at £5 a time, this was 2005 and she was about 2 and half when she started to attend, and was also dry in day too within a few wks of going ( I know we had a set back due to sickness otherwise she was potty trained within a wk ) so going back a little while aswell as she was socialised at Mum & toddler groups at times during week and other Sure Start schemes I would attend too.
Maybe council run nursery would be about £7-8 session these days.

Regarding keeping them out of reception/foundation,don't think many parents do it these days.
It's unfair to start a child in Yr 1 as all the class been together for whole school year and may cause problems.
