Playstation 3 data migration issues

Found 22nd Feb 2010
I have just bought a 250GB Slim Playstation 3 to replace my "phat" 80GB model.

What is the easiest way of transferring all of the saved data plus downloads onto my new console? I have an external hard drive that I can use to transfer the data but am unsure of how to do it.

Does anyone have a simple step by step plan of how to achieve this?

you just plug your HD in and go to back up system. its fairly easy to do.
you may need to format you HD first though ( not sure)
then plug in to your new one and restore from the HD.
can take quite a while to do it all.

Yes, there is one on plastation.com it is very simple. just plug the external harddrive and go to the back up option

Ok that's great, I've got some photos/videos on the HD at the moment - can anyone confirm if I have to remove that first as I don't want the data on there deleted!!

The USB HDD, needs to be formated in FAT32 (not NTFS)
Easy done, .

Your ext hard disk needs to be formatted with FAT32 for the PS3 to recognise it. If it is already then your existing files won't be touched. If you need to convert it to FAT32 from e.g. NTFS then that will wipe your data so you'll need to look for another way

You have nothing to lose by just trying it anyway, you'll soon see if your hard disk will work ok or not.

The ]PS3 website has good info about backup and restore. I've done it myself and it's pretty straighforward

you may not be able to transfer all your saved games over as some games put copy protection on the saved games

because i have the same problem i tried transfering my saved game from one ps3 to another and it said error this file is copy protected i have not found away to get round this yet?:x

What would you recommend?

I recommend "EASEUS" if using Vista.
"Swissknife" is supposed to be good too, but won't work with Vista.

I am not sure of the spellings, and I don't have links, as I am not on my own PC.

OP - dont forget if you format your hard disk, you will erase all the data on it :?

I used PC Maestro for the record but it's not a freebie I'm afraid

Yep I've backed up my HD and formatted it using something I found online which uses the FAT32 system. Will transfer the data in about an hour so hopefully will go ok!

Can get my PSN, friends and trophies transferred painlessly but cannot do my game saves

I backed up onto my HD from my old PS3 and tried to restore onto my new PS3 but no game saves are showing in their corresponding folders. As far as I'm aware the saved data from my old PS3 is still on my HD - can someone please help?!?!

I'm trying to do this as well - what happens if you haven't got an ethernet cable to transfer between the two? My saved game data is now on my external HD and I can't load it onto my new PS3?

try backing up game data to a USB stick in a folder structure as follows:-

]Folder structure

Reference for the folder structure used on a removable USB storage device (flash drive, external hard-drive). The correct structure is essential when copying certain files to the PS3.
