Hi all,

I went to play on my playstation 3 this monring only to find that the disc entered would not load. I do not have an error message and I can still use iplayer and internet etc.

I have googled the problem on line and heard about the secret menu. I have been onto the menu and rebuilt the database but it still won't work.

In the same menu I selected restore playstation 3. This completed its task but the games I have loaded still do not work.

I'm guessing instead of it being a software issue its probs down to:

The laser needs cleaning
Laser needs replacing?

Has this happened to anyone?

All advice is greatly received

Try other discs like a movie dvd.

If it fails to read, then try cleaning the laser.

Otherwise if it's out of warranty you can get a new laser and fit it yourself fairly easily. eg

Needs a new laser.

That problem happened to me, twice. My model is a launch 40gb. Sony fixed it, first time under warranty the second it was 8 months out but they still fixed it.

What model is yours, just out of interest.

I thought it might do!!! I will try and clean it first but if I have no luck then I will buy a replacement laser

Is it an old Phat one? Drive failure is very common in the older models

I've had it a good year or so. Its a 40gb model but its the US/Jap version (White console) So Sony will be no help to me as I'm pretty sure I will have to phone up the USA helpline

yeah its a Phat 40gb White (USA/Jap Import). Its been working fine and its not been dropped or hit etc its just stopped working!! I'm hoping its dust in and around the laser. I'm probs best to see if I can fix it and if not then cut my losses and buy a new one

If I can't fix my ps3 then I think I will get a slim!! Hopefully a clean of the laser or a new laser will do the trick but if not a slim will be my 1st choice

Sony will charge you £131 for a replacement/refurbished model. Done this a while back, but Dixons covered the cost as it was less than 2 yrs old.

I can probs buy a 2nd hand phat ps3 for around this price and still have my broken one to sell on. I'm guessing Sony want your console in part of their deal?
