Please Help

Hi,
Sorry not too long ago I posted in regards to British Gas overestimating our gas bill and that have since been sorted out. But another problem has arised our old gas company NPower says we still have oustanding bills even though we have been using British Gas for a year now!

I have been told by relatives that all debts should have been cleared with NPower before being allowed to switch over to British Gas and that they should not be asking us for more money.

So I was wondering does anyone know what I should do and whether it is true that I dont need to pay NPower. I find it a bit odd how they are asking us to pay now rather than when we switched over British Gas as I thought we wouldnt have been able to close the account without pay outstanding debts.

Thanks for any help you can offer. Thanks

it sounds like old company has one meter reading and new company has different one

when changing over I was told to take a meter reading, which ended up themj owing me money.. Having just changed Southern Gas/Electric sorted out the outstanding bills and I would expect your old supplier would have done the same.. sounds like your going to be spending some quality time on the phone to Npower.. oh the joys

you should not have outstanding bills from npower as \BG should have taken over all your debt. thats what happened for me last year.

tell them you are not paying and you wish to dispute it. I was with N-power who were rubbish for me...switched to Atlantic who have been great so far...ten months after switching they told me I owed £85...I said I am not paying...I settled my bill when I left. The girl on the other end of the phone didn't get it and I got a final demand...so i rang them again and said I am not paying I opened a dispute...they had no recored of the dispute being opened but opened one then....they told me it could take up to three months to sort out...that was 6 mths ago now so I guess I was right and they were wrong.

You have nothing to loose by challenging them.

I've just switched to British gas from powergen and I know for a fact that I owe powergen money but have yet to hear from them. They can be quite slow chasing up these things but I would check meter readings, make sure both companies haven't charged you for the same electricity.

yeah British Gas had a wrong reading for us from the start and took ages to clear that one up in fact I am still trying to sort that out!

I agree. I think I am going to have to dispute it, I know that we probably do owe them money from estimated readings or something like that but the bill came to £5000 which seems a bit ridiculous for 3 months!!

yeah it a lot higher, well British Gas told me that they will sort everything out for me and will contact NPower but still no word from them and the bills are still coming through and them a relative mention that I shouldnt owe NPower anything as all debts should have been settled so I was wondering whether that would be a valid point to dispute

a bill by npower should have come to you once the change over had taken place? if this doesnt happen and things get missed npower assume you are still a customer as their has been no final read and bill

stand your ground though, find what your starting bill read was with bg, and what your last read with npower was, if you had continaul estimated bills with npower maybe this is where the discrepency has come from
