dear all,

I would like to purchase a PC for my 12 year old brother. He hadn't had a gaming PC yet, but played some games on mine and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I reckon it should have and ssd 240GB, 8gb ram. don't really know what else.

which sites you would recommend? maybe some particular setups? what else should be considered?

the Pentium g3258 and a 750ti would be a good start imo

Start with working out a budget. Next examine the location where the computer is being kept, whether it be a study, bedroom or under the stairs. Thus to identify and understand what dimensions, size and peripherals (printers, speakers etc) can fit, whether it be a laptop or computer (chasis sizes m-itx - atx). The other important factor is what exactly will the computer be utilised for? Gaming, films homework, researching art...... Also will the computer need to be silent, overclocked or another specific requirement? Only then can other users provide a few ideal suggestions.

Those are motherboard sizes. Chassis that take Mini ITX motherboards can be anything from 2L to 30L+

Generally I'd say:
CPU: Intel Haswell CPU. Even the lowest ones are fine (G1840) with an i5 being the highest you probably want to go for a twelve year old (of the i7s only the 5820K is really worth considering for gaming). AMD-wise the only two that are worth considering at current prices are the 860K and the FX-8320 and you still have to squint at the numbers slightly.

Graphics card: Radeon 250X to 280 (maybe 280X/290/290X) on the AMD side, 750 to GTX 970 on the nVidia. Generally AMD are the better choice for performance until you hit the 970 but nVidia offer better power efficiency on the 750/750ti/970 as they're a much newer design.

Operating system: Windows 8.1

Yes I do know that thank you about them being motherboard form factors but writing the comment quickly. I should have said case or chasis that take m-itx to atx motherboards. Next time I'll extrapolate the information with exact sizes, dimensions, and explain all the advantages and disadvantages and include propriety designs and obsolete form factors? Sorry but haven't got the time, and not in the mood presently.

In this instance wait for the user to explain what he desires as without a budget or reason to the build it would be difficult to provide a more detailed assistance including specific components, prices and companies to purchase the items from.

Without a budget it's hard to say.

I'd recommend an i5 (£130) cpu paired with an r9 280 (£140) gpu. The cpu and gpu are the main priority components on a gaming pc. Leave the ssd out, as it's not important to gaming and they're very likely to be better value for money later. Bear in mind that he'll probably want to upgrade components as time goes by anyway. So, it's not a big deal to upgrade the ram or add hard drives.
