Please Help, Looking for help in choosing 2 of either Advent 4211 or Asus Eee PC 1000h

    Hi everyone,

My fiance and I are both looking out for a netbook each.

We've been poking around the net getting information and looking for best deals and so far we've come up with these two options:

An Advent 4211 each @ £279 instore with a 4yr coverplan @ £69 Making a total of £348 per netbook with the -slim- chance pcworld/currys will do some discount for buying two net books with two cover plans at the same time.

    or

An Asus Eee PC 1000H each @ £327.50 from the Link (£337.50 and using the £10 off code)

Could anyone be so kind to help comment on which would be the best option for the following use:

Mobile Broadband, Heavy IM use, Watching AVI's on VLC, Running Office and playing some older games (Can anyone answer the difference in graphics cards? Whats UMA and GMA and which is better?)

Also if you know of a better deal than the above we've found please let me know.

Thanks for your time in advance to any who reply

Advent are PC World / Currys own brand and personally I would steer clear of them.

There is a review of the ASUS here (and they seem to like the Advent - see review)

That is why we wanted to take out the cover plan for incase they break down so in the future can learn from the possible "mistake" of purchasing.

Great article, was very helpful - Rep given for speedy and helpful reply

The Eee pc seems to be in the lead for me but is there anyone else with a view on these two or experience with? And any info on GMA and UMA and what games could be played on the system?

They both use the same GMA950 graphics don't they?

    Mobile Broadband

eee definitely wins this one as it has the longer battery life.

    Heavy IM use

The wind apparently has the better keyfeel. Although I do prefer the eee PC's style of right shift to the one on the wind (which is the same as my desktop keyboard and took me months to get used to)

    Watching AVI's on VLC

Definitely the eee PC as it's got better speakers.

Running Office and playing some older games

they've got very similar performance, the same screen resolution and the same graphics chip so I would expect them to be very similar.

I'd also consider the eee 901, as you get the same screen resolution, same specs, a longer battery life, smaller machine and lighter weight.

eee 901, eee 1000 and MSI wind side by side. From ]here

The downsides with the 901 are the smaller 20GB capacity and poorer keyboard so you'd ideally want to try out the keyboard and see if you could live with it before buying.

EDIT: For games I would think you're probably talking 2003 and older, you'll also be limited to games that will run at 800x600 (1024x600 hasn't been used for long), although with games of that age it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I know its not one of your 2, but my wife got the acer aspire one, had an Eeepc previously and she is really pleased with the acer, found the Eeepcs lack of memory a pain. Paid 299 to get it on release day but think they have gone to 279 in some places now.

I have not experienced the advent you mention, but having seen it. Looks quite nice. wether it will have the same issues the normal advent laptops can have (poor build quality, keys coming off etc) i dont know.

I have an asus, although the keys are too small for my chubby fingers, its a good little laptop.
