Plumbing Help!!

Ive got water constantly pouring from my overflow outlet from my cold water tank in my loft, it has been like this for a couple of weeks now. Speaking to a couple of guys at work they have said it will prob be the ball cock or seal that is replaced and that I should be able to do this myself.

Does anyone know how easy it is to do?? How do I know if it is the ballcock or seal that needs to be replaced?? And do I need to drain the water tank or that first??

Cheers

Here's a very rough diagram of a water tank with a float and ballcock in.
It's very similar to a normal toilet tank system.
The way it works is relatively simple.
Water comes in through the ballcock assembly
Float rises to a predetermined level
When the water gets to the desired height it closes a valve on the ballcock part and the water stops.

To find out whether it is the float that needs adjusting or the seal gently lift the float arm so you are sure the valve is closed. If water stops entering the tank you will know it's the float arm that needs adjusting.

If water keeps coming in then there should be a rubber seal or O ring or something like that to replace.

Sometimes water can enter the float itself causing a balance problem. If need be the float ball just screws on and off.

Ok the above is very basic and only based on my experience of water tanks/toilets and you may find your system is different in varying degrees. The basic principle is however fairly similar.
I may have got some of the terminology wrong, I'm no plumber !!
It is good practice to turn off the cold water supply to the tank before adjusting just in case.
You shouldn't need to drain the tank.
