Many Thanks in advance, Please can anyone tell me what's the best thing to dumb a sore throat? I have severe tonsillitous and am on a double dose of penicillin 500mg four times per day. I've been on them now for 24 hours but my throat feels like it's been cut. Any suggestions very very welcome as I am sooo down with it. I have so far gargled with cold water, was told not to do it with asprin as it'll irritate. Got strepsells, had ice cream (well let it run down my throat)

Kind Regards

Claire x

Many Thanks to you all, sent my other half to our local co op! I'm gutted because it's saturday and I can't have my usual wine etc! -Will make up for it next weekend.

Listerine mouthwash is excellent for numbing the pain.

Feel for you hun as i too suffer badly with it about 4/5 times a year

Hope your feeling better soon xxx

I swear by this, it sounds rank but when you do it it is really not bad and it really works.

Take a glass of warm water and add a tea spoon of cayenne pepper and stir. Gargle the mixture and spit, repeatedly. It stings a little if you get it on your lips, but it really works for me. You have to keep stirring till you take a mouthful because the cayenne pepper tends to sit at the bottom.

Take it from a doctor who has also had tonsillitis - Garggle with warm to hot salty water - the saltier the better! Also, taking paracetamol will help with the pain

Hope that helps

Gargle with salt water:thumbsup:

My other halfs come back with greek style natural yoghurt - made with cows milk. Is this any good?? Doesn't taste of anything but is going down better than anything else but it has sugar content of 6.6g per 100g. It says that it is medium?? If it's made with milk then I'm taking it milk is ok for it??

Many Thanks all for your suggestions - I feel like ripping my throat out at the mo!

Gargle asprin that can help, or get some stuff called dequacaine, it helps numb sore throats.

gargle with hot salty water - this works wonders on a sore throat.

Manuka Honey - the best - but expensive
New Zealand's active manuka honey is used as a natural product both internally and topically on the skin. Apitherapy, the name given to treatment with natural honey, has been used by many different cultures throughout history. Such uses are now being reconsidered by a modern world in light of new research into the properties and uses of active manuka honey.
What is known as 'Active' Manuka Honey has enjoyed growing acceptance by the academic and medical world of late, and reporting of the honey's unique properties has proliferated in the world's press and media.

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand where beekeepers set up their hives in wild uncultivted areas in which Manuka bushes grow. The bees gather nectar from the flowers of the Manuka bush, which is indigenous only to New Zealand. The honey making process is enriched by the pollution free environment of New Zealand, and certain harvests of Manuka Honey have attracted the gaze of the medicial and scientific community. Some of the Manuka Honey produced has been found to have some very special properties indeed.

It is only thanks to academic research, predominantly in the last decade, that we are now able to explain many of the incredible observed effects that certain specially selected and tested honeys can have.

hot soup and a good nights sleep

This was recommended me by my doctor. Gargle with dissolveable asprin. Tastes horrible, but the painkiller takes away the pain, and asprin is a natural antiinflammatery so it takes down the swelling.

Gargle with Salt water before you go to bed.…Koa

We were a little apprehensive when recommended at first but we swear by it now. This really works, you should be able to get this in Chinatown – I was so happy I found out my local Vietnamese shop sold it (we live in Hackney London). Unlike the other sore throat remedies eg sweets, cough drops it doesnt cause drowsiness and you dilute it in warm water in about 1/3rd of a glass. It works for colds, sore throats and has a sweet taste to it.

PS: I didnt have my tonsils taken out either so am susceptible to sore throats every little while.

If you've got access to Co-Proxamol (not so easy to get nowadays) suck one.
It tastes revolting but will numb your throat (& your tongue).
Wish I could help you there but by the time it reached you the antibiotics will have kicked in.

GO to bed, rest and do nothing. You hgave no choice. Your body needs the time to recover, otherwise it will last a lot longer.

pure garlic cloves ... its a natural antibiotic

Nurofen Plus .... is the dogs!

salt water gargles

Night nures spiked with scotch!

antibiotics as a last resort lol

Get them out - best thing you could ever do if your a regular sufferer.
I once took a double dose of penicillin for 6 weeks trying to get rid of an infection and in the end turned allergic to the antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon I know it's unbelievably painful x

Eat a small piece of raw ginger my husband swears by it.

Black pepper crushed mixed with honey!! Does the job!!

I too personally suggest this method (Salt & Warm-Water), gargle a few times to remove as much build up as possible last thing at night! Do go easy on the Paracetamol ensuring you don't over do it? Stick with the Penicillin and wait for it to hopefully prove effective.

Good luck and I hope you do get well soon.

Also give the penicillin time to kick in..can take up to 48 hours or more for them to start working.

dissolve a co-codamol is some water and gargle that water, then drink it.
