Police - New tactics to catch drivers using mobiles

On Merseyside the Police have started using 'spies' (usually standing in bus shelters) to watch for passing motorists using mobile phones. This is mainly during the rush hour. They call ahead to a patrol car who will pull you over. Maybe this is being done elsewhere, but I have only just found out after a friend was pulled over.
I don't think this is a bad thing by the way. If it helps to save lives, then all well and good.

But wot if you finish the call by then? do they have proof other than a person seeing it.

This sounds intelligent... are you sure the police thought of it :whistling:

Nah just joking, but i do like this idea should catch a lot of people out

They check your call record [call log on your phone] apparently to prove the point.

to bad they cant catch real criminals

oh i dunno. whilst waiting on a call to catch a real criminal, they can be put to use catching these dangerous drivers.

Will they have permission to do that?

    Looks like they already have.

It;s a great idea. I hope they catch more people. I'm sick and tired of seeing people yapping into their phones and trying to drive. Their attitudes would soon change if anything happened to someone they knew because someone couldn't wait 5 minutes to make the call!

    In short - yes

id love to take pictures of people who drive past me on their mobiles. can i do that?

They can request your phone records, yes. Don't forget, you don't actually have to be using your phone to be prosecuted. Merely having it in your hand is enough.

I don't see the problem with this, driving whilst on a mobile causes problems. I have a bluetooth system installed in my car, and when i come off a call i look round and think how did i get here.

Good for them. It is just a shame tossers keep using their phones so the police have to use their time on this.

    Hey let's fool them...

Let's stop using mobile phones while we are driving!

    That'll show them!

Hope so, Mobile phones may seem petty but nothing can justify drink driving.

I don't think you should necessarily be done for using your mobile whilst driving but if you drive dangerously or carelessly then you should be done.

The same applies to women who at the traffic lights pose and apply their lipstick, brush their hair, Stroke their Pooch etc..

Also if talking on your mobile is dangerous then surely eating and drinking is dangerous as well.

There was a big case up here in Newcastle where a girl was caught on camera via the police helicopter eating an apple at the wheel!

Is eating a baked potato from Costco whilst driving home advisable.

DISCLAIMER: I may or may not have done this

As far as I am aware, there is no law against tuning your radio (with or without a remote control), eating, smoking or drinking (non-alcoholic of course) etc. The police only have the ability to take action if any of these actions result in dangerous/careless driving.

Pardon me for being pedantic, but you COULD drink a can of lager for example, at the wheel, as long as it was only the one, keeping you under the limit

you are correct there is no law, but police do not need to wait for you to cause an offence, they could, in theory, still stop you and charge you, as either of those activities will remove your attention from the road.

It seems you are correct, I thought we had an open container law for cars but it seems not, only most US states, Australia etc. Very interesting.

It wouldn't get them anywhere, to be caught for driving without due care and attention it needs to be proven, not just as an assumption. The Department for Transport states:

“While there is no specific ban on eating or drinking while driving, road … “While there is no specific ban on eating or drinking while driving, road traffic legislation places responsibility on all drivers to have proper control of their vehicles. If the police witness poor driving for whatever reason such as eating or drinking, tuning a radio, using a hands free mobile phone etc they have powers to prosecute.”

Hence unless they have that wrong, poor driving needs to be witnessed.

No, it's not correct, see the other posts about it.

bellabonkers - the case was that she was prosecuted for eating the apple - she decided to take the case to a trial, so, in order to properly instruct the jury as to how far she had travelled doing so, the helicopter was used at the conclusion of a normal flight to video the route.

this is fairly normal practice for police - it's just the media that stoked it up and spun the story.
