So many stories on the news and in the papers seem to be about this nowadays.

The John Terry story is driven by this too.

Don't agree with the John Terry comment at all there. He cheated on his wife (with whom he has two children with) with his best friend and work colleague's mother of his daughter. This has nothing to do with resenting the well off... this resolves around responsibility as a public figure and england captain.

i hate paupers back, especially the skanks that download illegal films/games/software

Get the tories in power I say.

Those who work for it deserve it! Those who moan about being unable to afford to live of welfare need to get out of this country!

Tax the poor and give the money to the rich, that's what I say. A kind of anti-robin hood!

Responsibility to play good football you mean? He does.

To think he has to have superior morals than Joe Public is slightly perturbing.

Maybe the terry story is about him betraying his wife? or about handing his mistress 20 grand to "cheer herself up",rather than him being well off?

imo people who cheat on their wives/husbands are the lowest of the low whether they have money or not. dont care if he is a footballer/bank manager/roadsweeper/claiming benefit or whatever.

Football players are very very overpaid.
£170,000 a week for kicking a ball around for 90 minutes?
It's ridiculous. Especially when we have people working as say doctors, policeman, firefighters etc, people who actually have a responsible job, earning that in like 6 years.

I don't have a problem with it.
If it was that bad, people should revolt and not go to games. They don't because they like to be entertained.

Good on him I say. I wish I had half his talent.

We need a mini revolution in this country.

Those that are poor are poor for a reason (not including disabled or old people in this by the way).

We need the 'cogs' of the machine to enable those with a little get up and go to make money.

Poor people are the cogs. Not everyone can be rich. Those that are rich often deserve to be so and therefore I'm all for taxing everyone to incentivise people to get up on a morning.

I just wish some politicians would be honest enough to voice this opinion.

I wouldn't say the John Terry story is driven by this, he's a guy that earns mega-bucks for kicking a ball about - fair play to him, if someone offered me that kind of money to do something like that I'd take it no questions, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people would do the same.

The story is driven by the fact that, aside from being paid so much money, he is the captain of Chelsea and captain of his country's football team. The latter role (and quite possibly the former, but not to the same extent) brings with it a responsibility to behave professionally and above reproach, both on and off the pitch. Now, as most people agree, cheating on your other half is not exactly acting in this manner. To take it ten steps further and not only cheat on his wife, but with one of his wife's best friends, and his own best friend's wife, is reprehensible. That is what is drivng the John Terry story, not money.

As for the poor in general resenting the rich, I wouldn't say this was true either...

... that's because I'm rich right?

Do I think one person should earn 50 times (or more) what somebody else does? No
Do I think Footballers, actors etc are the reason for this inequality? No

The papers concentrate of these stories because they know there is anger about the fact that peoples lives are getting harder. This has been made worse among other things to the money being wasted on Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as us all paying for the Banking crisis.

The truth is it's a good distraction. Attack some working/middle class person who has managed to escape the usual rat race, by happening to be good at something that makes a lot of money, and then does something stupid.

The media is of course owned by the super rich.

still trying to work out what john terry has got to do with this, or are you saying it isnt because he had an affair with someone elses wife, its because hes minted? i dont really resent anyone, no matter what race, class etc,etc although i must admit i have at times shown a little resentment to my ex, but that has nothing to do with his wealth or lack of it

No.

He has to try and guess if the coin will be heads or tails.

Successful people throughout history have enjoyed storied sexual lives - this is just jealousy.

There is a long tradition of resistance to social inequality that might be too easily dismissed in the OP and later posts. I note a tendency here to reify 'talent' and so mask it's cultural and social origins. We could reframe the question to something like: 'is it reasonable for poor people to demand greater social equality?'.

I also note here the myth that the rich are rich and poor are poor entirely of their own doing. This is a nice line to push if you want to maintain existing social structures, but seems a little unlikely. As Bauman suggests, the problem for individuals in our 'individualized society' is that they may no longer look to society to 'put things right'. We don't take collective responsibility it's just 'every man for himself'. A consequence then is an agonistic culture and this leads to discontent, crime and unhappiness.

So here is another question: would we have a happier society if we did more to redistribute wealth including through public goods?

If someone does something 50 times better then they should be rewarded accordingly.

It is a widely held opinion that people in prominent and influential positions in terms of how their behaviour may affect others (i.e. people who are considered role models) should be held to higher standards in both their professional and private lives.

People who hold such an opinion, and there are many, would be perfectly capable of disapproving of John Terry and passing opinion on what should happen to him without being jealous. You disagreeing with such an opinion doesn't stop it existing.

Who decides what is fhe 50 times better thing?

Nursery nurse / Chief exec?
Teacher / Hollywood star?
brain surgeon / stockbroker?

Truth is the only measure that is used now is how much profit can be made from them, not how many people they effect or help. In my opinion this leads to a lot of the resentment you talk about.

Surely the correct comparison is how many actors are there compared to teachers? Alternatively might I suggest number of famous teachers to famous actors? Either way it looks like the roles are reversed. If indeed you wish to maintain the fairly ridiculous stance that numbers alone have any correlation to worth/value to society.
