Yes you can take laptop in hand luggage but with ryanair it must be part of your one item so must fit in your bag, they don't care what is loaded on it!!!!!

Its *extremely* doubtful that they will check that it works, but I've seen people in the past who were pulled out of line to turn on their laptops/camera's etc, so there's always a small chance that they might get you to plug it in. Odds of 1000-1 though I would have thought.

To be safe, just put the HDD in your suitcase.

If you're worries, just set any 'questionable' folders and their contents to hidden, and then they won't appear. Do this on your HDD and your laptop. Airport security staff aren't gonna make you turn on the 'Show hidden files and folders' option...

And how exactly are they going to know that you haven't ripped the music and films from your own personal collection at home? They're not going to go round and check you have the original.

    Haha

Even if they want you to turn it on then that is fine do so. They are not there to catch someone who has downloaded stuff off the internet or anything else for that matter. They are there to see if the equipment could cause a threat. In other words they dont give a chit about the contents.

    this.

except they make you turn it on to make sure its not a bomb, though certainly wouldn't be hard to fit a bomb around a laptops internal workings as long as you didn't let the laptop heat up :whistling: think achmed the dead terrorist

i've done it on many occasions, and never been asked about it. i have also heard of people entering the US and having to turn the notebook on and also its software licensing being checked
