Sad times for the NHS if true, we all know it's at breaking point

These are the 19 hospitals, including five major acute hospitals, that are marked for closure as the NHS faces its biggest shake up in a generation to plug a £22bn black hole in funding, according to an investigation

Acute hospitals closing or at risk of closure: ::
South West London – one of five sites proposed to close – St Helier, St George’s, Epsom, Croydon, Kingston

North West London – future of Ealing Hospital in doubt

Leicestershire – one of three acute hospital sites proposed to close :: Black Country – merger of two general hospitals to a single site :

Dorset – merger of Royal Bournemouth and Poole Hospital Community

hospitals facing closure or redesignation
Alston, Cumbria ** :: Maryport, Cumbria ** :: Wigton, Cumbria ** :: Hinkley and District Hospital, Leicestershire :: Rutland Memorial Hospital, Leicestershire :: Bolsover Local Hospital, Derbyshire :: Newholme Hospital, Derbyshire :: St Leonards, Dorset :: Alderney, Dorset :: Westhaven, Dorset :: Ashburton, Devon * :: Bovey Tracey, Devon * :: Dartmouth, Devon * :: Paignton, Devon *

(* To be replaced by health and well-being centres) (** Closure of all beds under consideration)

I disagree, there are vampires that suck on the NHS every second. I'm not just talking about alcholics or obese people. Managers that get paid £60,000 a month. Locum Doctors £3000 a shift. Then you have the pharma companies that mark up the profit on medicines - that would make Apple blush.

While Jeremy Hunt has done absolutely nothing except cause rows with people who work in health care. How is this 7-day NHS meant to work when the system is creaking under the strain now? I think he's trying to run the NHS into the ground so their pals in the private sector can take over.

Wow but true.

The NHS is its biggest enemy. (or rather those that run it & "negotiate" contracts)

Why have the Tories been cutting them for the richest then?!

Thanks everyone who voted Tory. I bet they come with a rescue plan along with their newfound friend Trump, to setup a nice system where you pay for healthcare insurance - just like in the States now Trump has gotten rid of Obama Care.

NHS is top heavy with managers and not enough :(floor staff ) who do the actual work.

Did people expect anything else under the latest tory regime, its probably not something many tory mp or their families will have to worry about, but still wouldnt be surprised to see a full private healthcare package for the full family to feature in future mp expenses allowances.

The solution is simple, allow euthonasia for those capable of making that decision. Deport illegal immigrants. Charge immigrants for using the NHS. Charge drunks or anyone else with self inflicted injuries. Charge a small fee each time you see your GP.

should save some cash to invest in well-run hospitals.

I wouldnt bang on too much about Tories,

A lot of hospitals were built under Private Finance Initiative which left a lot of NHS Trusts massively in debt due to Labour.

The health service was not geared to collect money, but health tourism is a problem. Perhaps a national identity card would help, or perhaps people should be asked to show a passport before being seen. Something very simple would be for people with appointments to phone up if they are unable to attend, then someone else could be given that appointment.
Instead of "I forgot" it was too cold, I have to take the kids to school.

Will become unusable so people will resort to private health ,with incentives on tax etc . Will turn into what has happened to the dentist . Go private or no spaces . Disgrace .

The (floor staff) aren't paid anywhere near enough and have had their pay hammered over the past 7 years. Most don't even get anywhere near 1% due to the way that 1% is distributed, yet the managers all get the full 1%.

Don't we have £350 million per week extra to spend on the NHS though?

too many parasites, non jobs & paper shufflers,
need to cull a load of them & then it wouldn't need more money

Unfortunately, the latest part of a slow decline of services to come over the next two decades. If able to, I strongly recommend that anyone under-50 without a private plan should start a saving fund specifically for medical needs in later life. Without personal funding, life enhancing procedures such as knee and hip replacements will be become a thing of the past. The apportioning of public funds will become less generous for surgical matters as the growth in diabetes related needs absorbs an ever greater proportion.

How much did 1x roller blind for NHS get quoted?

A guy on Question Time last week was a procurement guy in the nhs and said it can take 2 years for a decision to be taken to change suppliers. .. Too many layers of non workers and high earners.

No it isn't just stop CUTTING taxes £4bn in tax cuts for the rich & businesses in THIS Parliament & that's before we take into account the ones dodging it in the first place.

I watched that.

The bloke was spot on. They have preferred contractors.

If you need a £200 laptop the NHS has to pay £1000.

That is how absurd their purchasing is.

£16 Billion a Year

That's how much the NHS spends on treating obesity-related illness.

You can talk about overpriced blinds, middle-managers or health tourism but it's nothing.

62% of people are overweight

20% of 10 and 11 year olds are obese, not overweight, OBESE!

Middle managers aren't the problem, unless they're middle managers at McDonalds. The issue is only going to get worse.

How many billions is that going to save?

The NHS need reform - it needs an audit that it'll pledge to act upon and actually be allowed to act upon.

Screw trident tho, easy answer.

That is bananas, how come things like that haven't been changed when swingeing cuts have been made to other areas? Another state-sponsored stich up with certain private companies?

The other issue is of course the ageing population. Go into most departments and it's not health tourists but old people who fill most of the seats.

We keep people alive for longer by using expensive treatments, so they can develop new conditions that require even more expensive treatments.

One answer is to increase the retirement age so they pay income tax for longer and maybe even have private healthcare coverage.

People live longer, the retirement age hasn't increased in kind. That's an issue isn't it?

Maybe instead of plowing all the money into a hs2 high speed link that will see housing estates demolished in south Yorkshire for a link thats going to be expensive and unrealistic then put the money into the NHS! From what they want to spend on the hs2 they could improve the existing railway lines and help the NHS
