Post Office trying to con me

Found 1st Mar 2008
I had some 1st class stamps 3 months old, bought 20 at once, used them to send letters to family and friends, from revenue and protection, saying my 1st class stamp hasnt been sold for 3 years and by using it its fraud.

Strange thing is I have been using these for months even sent a letter to brother last week which went through fine.

The letter was sent to my mum who thestamp was on a mothersday cad too.

The letter is very rude as I say mentions fraud etc, the stamp is red and says 1st on it.

The whole point of stamps marked 1st class is because they are valid 1st class stamps regardless of any price rises.

I would be tempted to forward a copy of the letter to the PO HQ and ask them to explain.

I'd probably also suggest that RM are committing fraud by suggesting their service is first class!!

]Heres what MSE has to say about this.

This Is A Puzzle To Me Too. If It Was Me, I Would Send A Photocopy Of The Rude Letter To The P.o. Complaints Department. Visit Your Local Post Office For A Form. It's Bad Enough That Our Mail Is Slower Than A Snail, Without Rude Letters Also. Good Luck.

I'm a PO manager, and can assure you that, regardless of when they were bought, they are valid to use. As guv says, the whole point of them having 1st printed on them, rather than a value like they used to, is that they can be used whenever, regardless of price increases - and they changed that a lot longer than three years ago!

It won't have come from the PO, it'll be Royal Mail that have sent the letter - RM deal with mail processing, not the Post Office (contrary to popular belief!) and RM have a Revenue & Protection dept, PO don't.

Customer Service number is 08457 740 740, alternatively I'd write back to whichever CS address is on the letter and get them to explain themselves, because they're certainly telling porky pies.

Thats what I meant sorry, my parents sent me a scan of the letter, it also mentions a charge £1.08 I think.
Its just strange out of 17 items I sent this is only one that has had problem.

are you sure its not just for underpaid postage?

I'd be very interested to see this letter - usually charges relate to underpaid postage, though I can't work out exactly what a £1.08 charge would be, it's a very odd amount and not one I've ever seen/heard of before.

The £1.08 will be an 8p oversize/overweight deficit plus the standard £1 admin charge.

My guess is the envelope was too large for a single 1st class stamp.

The difference between 1st and 1st Large is 14p, if they charged it at 2nd Large it would be 6p, hence £1.08 not making sense...

Sorry wasnt sure exact amount as it was my parents who got the card saying charge, I know they said £1 something but it wasnt much over a pound.

The letter definately mentions about the stamps being invalid and not sold for 3 years and fraud etc.
