where are you stuck at? or where is it that you need the help?

Firstly thanks soo much sadiebabes

OK heres the deal.

I have a pc i am selling, and i need to format the hard drive and everything on it.
The thing is the machine has windows XP on it and didn't come with a startup disk or startup CD (Was off ebay...yes i know )
So is there anyway to format it quickly and easily, without losing the windows xp on the machine.

The person buying it, is going to install his own OS anyway, but want to see the machine clean and working before he buys.

Ok, so just for personal safety, i am manually deleting everything, and then which files should i delete to make sure he can't acces passwords etc.

Not that i dont trust the guy, just better to eb safe than sorry

Anyone know a secure delete program i can use, or a way i can format the computer quickly whilst he is here, so i can show him that it works then delete everything so he has everything wiped?

Can you borrow an xp disc off a mate, or acquire one, then i'm sure somewhere kicking about on the net there will be an xp key retrieval tool, so that you can right this activation KEY down and then do a clean install using your newly acquired xp disc

Not as simple as that unfortunately - there's countless hidden files, registry entries etc etc to erase and even then its still possible to access some deleted files. To be sure you are rid of all your data you really need to format (ideally a secure format which erases the disk several times if you want to be fully secure). If they are collecting why not format it after they have seen it working. Alternatively you could demonstrate it working with Ubuntu or something like that?

That might be your best bet...

Fwibble, i just thought of that, unfortunatly they are all at work til 5!

Jah128, do you know any program i can use then?
Anyways i can format the hard drive without using an xp disc.

PS: Someone did just say that i could download ubuntu and do a complete format using that! Is this possible? If so anyone know how it works?

I think you find in xp you can create your own recovery discs. Then just boot up the PC with these discs and do a clean install, the software for XP will remain on the discs. I cant give you the method to do it on XP as I'm running vista sorry, but try the help program on XP, I'm sure it will guide you on how to create some recovery discs

Yes you can do it using Ubuntu (or you could even install ubuntu and demonstrate the system working that way), but this is a pretty big download. There are lots of boot discs out there that let you boot to a dos prompt and format the hard disc - is it formatted for NTFS or FAT32 at the moment (and how big is it?)

This site has a few boot discs that would have what you need: freepctech.com/pc/…tml***NB Not tested/verified by me***

ummm maybe not a good idea, no offence but if u don't know how to format a disk then a complete os install is ok with windows but linux installs can be very difficult for novices. its a gamble
also consider "freespire" ]here quite user friendly!
other things to watch for;
using a key recovery software, the key might not match the version on the disk u obtain
Is there no licence number stuck on the machine?

Use Killdisk...

killdisk.com/dow…htm

The free version will wipe the disk with one pass..

Its NTFS, yeh i think downloading and installing unbuntu may be a bit complicated like.

Maybe instead a delete program off the internet. I have deleted all my programs and documents all ready.

Does anyone know where to find the cookies to delete.

I think if i can't find a delete program that can be trusted then i will just have to manually do it as best i can. Im not too worried as anything he can restore on the computer hasn't got any vital information really.

All my cards have chanegd since i used this so no financial information.

Not really - if you just want the hard disc erased - download ubuntu 8.04, boot from the DVD drive and choose install and it pretty much holds your hand the whole way...
But probably not really worth it in this case. NB It's next to impossible to erase all your data without formatting - its stored in too many different places, depending on what software you have installed..

]DBAN sounds like what you're looking for.

Unbuntu can be run off it's CD so once you've wiped the disk you can use that to prove the machine is working.

This is the tool you need:

]Ccleaner

Manually delete all the files you want to, then run this program. It's free & it does a deep clean (including your dat files, which contain information on every site you've visited, every word you typed into a search engine, etc)
