I think the best choice would be a Bosch PSB 18Li - got mine with a spare battery from B&Q for £89 (RRP £169) . They're always on offer somewhere at about that price . Great thing about them is that the bats fit many other bosch tools (I have a strimmer for instance) . Find one at that sort of price and he'll be well chuffed . Avoid the NiCd models batterys are rubbish ,stick to the Li models -preferably 18V.

Is he a professional? If not, and there for genral DIY. I would go to Aldi or lidl as all there tools come with a three year guarantee, just remember to keep your receipt.

One of these for instance…1-2 . Only one battery with this one but gives you the idea .

You could always use my mothers logic and buy him a tool he needs to finish some house work off

I would go with damo's answer, for £80 you should be able to pick up a li-on drill, a mains multi tool and some odds and sods accessories. As stated 3 year warranty and the quality is not bad,

It would be prudent to find out what he would like or need. Us men are simple creatures, better buy us something we need than surprise us with something we don't need.look around his tools, he might gave a new drill already. What sort of diy does he do.... If in doubt take him to a diy place and ask him to choose.

Aldi tools are very good value for money, Lidl tools are not so well made in my opinion.
