    Pre-Payment Gas Meter Help !

    Something I'd said I'd check out for the Parents !

    They currently use a Pre-Payment Gas Meter with Ebico and recently have noticed it taking more credit then it usually does. It may be due to the fact it's winter but the same amount of Gas is currently been used as before so I can't see why there can be a sudden increase.

    Anyway I took a Meter reading last night for them and this afternoon to check usage. So here they are.

    8PM Last night :- Gas Meter Reading 7957.981 / Meter Credit :- £23.71
    2.30PM This afternoon :- Gas Meter Reading 7966.038 / Meter Credit :- £20.20

    (I Think Your Supposed To Ignore The Decimals)

    According to Ebico's website the cost between meter readings should have been 32p !

    So, Anyone here that can make sense of all this ?

    Could be a service charge.

    i used to have prepayment meters and they would take £1.20 off at 2am.

    Theres A Standing Charge On Prepayment Meters And The Gas Rate Is Slightly Higher Than The Standard Amount . Hope This Helps .

    they charge you a daily fee for using their machine too. and some other ****.

    we have one of these and we're 'out the door' with it.

    It could be that the meter is set to take the charge for gas used and an additional charge to cover any arrears. If your parents dont have arrears its best to check that the previous resident didnt have them and your parents arent paying the extra still.

    Central Heating was on for around 4 hours, water/boiler on for around 6 hours (Clicks on every minute or so to maintain temp). The Central Heating is an old system which won't help.

    What's strange is the fact there was only a 9 kW difference between readings which in theory costs 34p (3.77p kwh) yet £3..51 was taken.

    There's no money owed according to the meter and there's no standing charge with Ebico. The meter was "frozen" for 2 weeks prevoisly because the company which updates the meters etc had changed all meters from Pre-Payment to Credit meters, an update sorted that probelm out.

    That's probaly not far off from what they use with Central Heating on. I guess it's all normal then ?

    turn off that boiler mate, not doing you any favours

    also the machine cannot have changed on its own it has to be re-calibrated by an engineer before the rates can be changed

    check in all the cupboards and under the bed make sure nobodys running a hydroponic light without you knowing....

    check theres no suspicios wires near your electric/gas supply ....maybe the neighbours hooked their system up to yours,,,

    I agree on the boiler, it's out of date and probaly fairly costly but the only other method of heating the water would be to use the electric.

    No suspicious wires etc either.

    They cant take money in advance for a pre pay meter, the whole point is you pay for what you use so being winter isnt an issue here.

    I use NPower for my gas and have a quantum card(looks like a cc). I'm charged a daily charge but its certainly not £3.51 per day.

    I'm with Ebico and same thing happened to my prepaypent meter, Now it seems to cost a fortune.

    I assumed their making up for when the meter was frozen for a couple of weeks?.

    I'm using about £40 a week + in the summer it was £10-£15 a week...!!!

    That was my intial thought but according to the meter nothing is owed, unless it won't show on the meter ?.

    I'll have to get them to ring up next week and see if they can shed some light.

    Same again, £0:00 for dept etc, I think it's strange as well. Ebico was the cheapest energy supplier for me, However the price increase in September/October time could also have something to do with it.

    I'm thinking of having a standard meter fitted as the Pre-payment meter was from a previous tenant.

    I thought it might be better for me as can't afford to go into dept.

    Ebico still are the cheapest for the Parents I believe. I guess it's just the cost of Winter !. Pre-Payment are easier to manage and buget for that's why they use one.

    I think the cost is right. For some reason gas meters work in units but gas prices are normally in kWh.
