Prescription charges abolished in Scotland

After realising this wasn't an April Fool, I have to say this is a bad move.

Charges have gone up 20p in England to £7.40 - which is a good thing. Those who need it should pay for it in my humble opinion.

good news, hopefully will come to england soon

free healthcare for everyone!

It's a complete Joke really. Why should people get prescriptions for free?

This coming from someone Scottish who has to get a prescription per month

Its so unfair. It costs me a fortune at the chemist for my medication plus i've been unwell recently and had to have extra. I don't earn any money so sometimes I do without as I can't afford the prescription.

Good but I'm sure taxes will be covering the cost of free prescriptions

It will happen in England one day

I guess to abolish fees would at least make it fair?

What about the obese smokers who need more prescriptions than anyone because they eat too much and are unfit/unwell? They should have to pay for prescriptions.

These drugs cost the NHS millions.

Are you kidding? Do you not think we pay enough through national insurance and tax?

I think this is the opposite, why should a millionaire be entitle to free prescriptions. Especially Duncan Banatine....he should pay for his anti-miserable pills.

I think its outrageous we should pay and they shouldn't. If everyone paid a nominal amount for their scripts it would be a much fairer and cheaper system.

Why should people who don't use prescriptions pay for those who do? I pay enough in NI for an NHS I never use.

But you may use them! That's another discussion - you can then go on to say why pay for schools when you don't have children and why pay for lighting in towns when you live in the country! You and yours may benefit one day - but it should at least be a system which is fair.

I don't hate people on benefits.

I've just never quite understood why I should have to pay for a prescription so that I'm able to work, in order for the government to take a not inconsiderable piece of MY money and use it to give free medication to people who don't contribute.

I understand that I can afford the prescription, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I should.

You're not wrong but I think the prescription thing is a but different to the other areas you mention.
I know off people who will do anything to get 'signed off work' and part of this is usually entails getting a prescription of some kind.

Free prescriptions for the elder population of those with critical or long term illness is fine by me - everything else they should pay for as and when they need it.

Cool with it. Most of these people don't have any opportunities in life and it greases the wheels of business and diplomacy.

I'm happy to pay for mine though I think it's expensive - it make's me think twice before getting them!! I do agree that elderly, school age and terminal should still get them free - I have someone who meets that criteria on every level and you never know when they could be me.

Long term illness is another unfair one though - my best friend has thryoid so gets free scripts - my OH has high blood pressure and has to pay!!

High blood pressure is usually self inflicted though to be fair.

Self inflicted??? It's hereditary!

Can't say for sure it's the reason but I did see a devout non-racist refer to someone as 'monkeybrains'. Hardly appropriate for a thread discussing racism. Or maybe it was?

Possibly, but that doesn't mean that 95% of cases are self-inflicted.

Hi Jonny Two Toes! Those who self inflict through bad lifestlye choices can help to reverse the symptoms by improving their choices. However those who have the correct life style choices and are unlucky or have a family history of hypertension will need medication for life.
