Printer not working with only black cartridge

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice-

I'm desperately trying to get my printer to work, I recently recycled the colour and black cartridges which had ran out, (hadn't used colour in years) bought a new black one, but the printer will now not work at all and says: "The following ink cartridge cannot be recognised: colour". No buttons on the printer are working and it will not even scan. I have changed settings to greyscale but it will not print anything at all. It just comes up on the monitor too that the colour cartridge is not regognised. (Canon Pixma MP460)

Any advice would be great

If it's like the Canon I had it won't work if any of the carts need changing. It won't give you the option of printing is B&W with just a black cart.

One of the reason I binned it. . .

Thanks Steve, just got off the phone with customer support and he confirmed that. SO annoying!

He wouldn't believe that the color cartridge had been empty for years so that's why I assumed I didn't need it. Looks like I'll have to buy an empty one from ebay, it's crazy.
