    Printer Problem - HELP

    Hi...

I have just got a HP color laserjet 4650dn from my wifes work (no longer on their network) and am trying to get it up and running at home.

There is no USB connection so I have a red plug in type cable which I have been advised to plug into the back of my sky netgear box (as no port left on PC) but what now?

I can't seem to locate it... do I need to download drivers from HP or should it find the printer somehow?

    Help please

Sounds like you've just plugged in the network cable from printer to router. Have you plugged the serial cable into PC?

It's a network printer so the software will be installed on the printer itself. You'll need to add a network printer using the add a printer wizard. If if can't find it, you firewall may be blocking the ip address of the printer, so go in to your router settings and find the ip address the printer is using and try pinging it from the command line of you PC with the firewall off. If it responds, add this ip address to the allowed list of you firewall and turn the firewall back on. Then add the printer by specifying the ipaddress in the network address.

If the printer had been on a company net work it may be set up with a static ip address.

You need to go into the control panel and change this Auto DHCP.
it should pick up the router (gatway) and get it's own ip address from there.

You may also need the drivers if they are not on your PC.

Print out a configuration page from the control panel on the printer) and it will tell you what the ip address is in there.
