Private number plate - would like to sell but not sure how or how much??

I recently bought a car with a private plate that really was for the previous owner. She was a police officer so it begins P999 then her initials.
Can you sell it and change my car back to normal plates (54 reg) and how do you do it?
Anyone know how much its worth??

Any help will be appreciated, Thank you!

you have to put the 999 on retention but best consult the dvla web site

Same as most things, number plates are only worth what someone is willing to pay. You will probably get quite a bit for that. Like dog_cop says, consult the DVLA and also have a look in some newspapers where they list plats, you may get an idea of the going rate.

wouldnt think its worth mutch....not v noticeable

You can get a free valuation of your plate online.
Just google "sell private number" plate and you
will get loads of sites up.
Get a form/details of how to change your reg plate back from dvla
I think the cherrish fee is around £80

Erm.... Could you explain please (sorry if I'm being thick)

Go to the local DVLA Office and they will give you some forms to fill in and a new number for the car. You get a certificate to say it's yours but you aren't using it at the mo., if I remember correctly you have to pay each year to keep it "retained" or you forfeit it. The DVLA will also sell it for you on their site and give you a valuation. You can do it on line too, but I prefer face to face as I'm easily confused.

Click on the dvla link i gave above it gives all the details.
"retention" is when you pay the dvla to "hold" the reg number
for you so you can sell it/or whatever

I believe it will cost you £25 a year after the initial £80 to take it off the car, they will give you the cars original number back or a age related one if it was the original. You really need to value it cos it could cost you £100 by the time you have bought the new plates as well. Dont forget to say that the buyer pays the transfer fees as well....

Go to this site fill a short form and you'lle get a quote within the hour!
