    Private Tutors

I'm thinking about getting a private tutor for an hour a week for my A-Level Physics exams.

Just wondering, do people find they help alot? I'm not exactly bad at it, just struggle and I want to get it up from a B to an A grade.

I can get extra help in college, well I have an hour private lesson a week which helps me alot, but due to taking on an extra lesson this year, adding 8 hours onto my timetable and having to get a bus home after college, I dont have much spare time withough having to have 7 hours straight of lessons.

Can you get enough done in an hour and is it worth while?

If it can help me get the grades for oxford uni I would seriously consider it.

Also, how much can you expect to pay per hour approx?

    Cheers
    James

Can't comment on the tutor, but would you recommend taking physics A-level put it down in application

defo reccommend it...a good tutor will cost 20-25 per hour for 1 on 1

Its an interesting subject and I would take it again, mainly because I am doing a Maths Degree, or have applied to do one, and it strengthens my application as well as being enjoyable.

Cheers, there aren't many round near me that I can find so I will have to have a better look and maybe ask in college if they know anyone. Think it would help. Depends on how my january exams go too I suppose...

Maths and Physics do go hand in hand.If you think you have the potential to 'up' the grade then I would go for it, Depends where you live on the availability of tutors, first ask at school. Help may be available free, quite often newly qualified teachers will take on private pupils.Make sure the tutor is knowledgeable in the examination board you are taking. See what marks you get in the Jan exams, it may be ok but also a retake could give you the extra marks. Oxbridge look at GCSE results as well as A levels, they also look for your outside interests.Think carefully if that is the place for you.

Yeah I will check with college first, there are only two tutors for physics though, one only in for 1.5 days and with my timetable being packed its hard to find avaliable time unfortunately.

I'm retaking one exam that pulled me down to a B last year, I'm only 4 marks away so hopefully wont be too hard. I got A* in maths and physics at GCSE, 100% in Physics and Chemistry too. I've got my interview in just over a week, well I say interview, I'm actually there for 4 days and may have quite a few! Would love to go there, I've Bath or Sheffield as a back up choice but would love the challenge of working in an Oxbridge University as it's suppost to go much faster through material than other uni's do...

what are you hoping to study at uni?
i'd recommended a 1 on 1 tutor cos i see one to help me with my maths and its really helpful, i have no idea how much it costs privately though

If you're already decided on re-taking ( January?) that single module and have got on with the revision, I wouldn't bother with a tutor. Mind you, if it was up to me you wouldn't be re-taking but putting the extra revision effort into your A2 modules to 'up the average'. No point in particular if the people available to tutor you are only 'average' themselves.
TBH if your Maths is up to (Oxford?) standard, they aren't going to quibble about the odd mark or two in Physics, especially if you are doing their exams and jumping through their hoops for 4 days. I'm assuming you've already got extra maths things under your belt.

I'm not concentrating to much on my resit, its fairly easy really looking back on it with an extra year of knowledge, its more remembering things rather than actually applying it to questions.

Yeah I've done their exams etc, and doing Further Maths so hopefully it will all go well

Think you've pretty much decided not to bother with a tutor then. Past papers are more productive IMO.
Good luck; you seem to have things pretty well sorted.
